Description
Under direction, to supervise the operation of a section within the Pharmacy Division; and to participate in the activities of the section.
The County of Santa Clara Health System includes Primary Care Pharmacies, Specialty Care Pharmacies, and Inpatient Pharmacy services across three hospitals: Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospital & Clinics, O'Connor Hospital, and Saint Louise Regional Hospital. Primary Care Pharmacy Services include 8 pharmacies and a discharge pharmacy located across Santa Clara County. Specialty Care pharmacy services include Public Health, Better Health, Custody, Purchasing, Oncology, Behavioral Health and Specialty Pharmacies. The Inpatient Pharmacy at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, and Saint Louise Regional Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to ensure continuous and comprehensive patient care to residents of Santa Clara County.

Typical Tasks
  • Supervises and participates in the dispensing of drugs to in-patients and out-patients, the manufacturing of sterile and non-sterile drug items, and the receipt, storage and in-hospital distribution of pharmaceuticals;
  • Supervises the unit dose dispensing system;
  • Supervises floor inspections of drugs and medications;
  • Assures that patients are properly screened and instructed regarding drug usage;
  • Coordinates with State Medi-Cal consultants regarding regulation changes and compliance;
  • Maintains up-to-date pricing schedules;
  • Makes recommendations on, coordinates and implements procedures for expediting and carrying out the work of a section and insures that established procedures are followed;
  • Assures that appropriate techniques are used in compounding, distributing and dispensing drugs, that strict aseptic techniques are followed in preparing sterile solutions and that log books and report sheets and other records are properly completed;
  • Participates in the selection of new staff members for respective section;
  • Orients, assigns, trains and evaluates the work of assigned staff;
  • Acts as the principal professional resource in the section when questions or problems arise concerning the use, effectiveness, compatibility, stability and distribution of pharmaceuticals;
  • Assures that adequate levels of supplies are maintained;
  • Prepares reports on activities within the section;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards
Possession of a valid license to practice as a pharmacist in the State of California and sufficient experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy to demonstrate possession and application of the following:
Knowledge of:
  • Pharmaceutical chemistry, materia-medica, and arithmetic; pharmaceutical manufacturing methods;
  • Legislation governing hospital pharmacy services; principles of supervision and training.
    Ability to:
  • Assign, train and evaluate the work of professional and para-professional personnel; develop procedures to assure the efficient operation of a section of the Pharmacy Division;
  • Make effective recommendations concerning the improvement of section operations;
  • Interpret departmental policies to staff;
  • Advise medical, nursing and other personnel regarding the properties and effects, proper administration, stability and compatibility of drug substances;
  • Compound sterile and non-sterile drugs; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
