POSITION SUMMARY

The Superintendent, Terminal Operations will ensure safe and effective daily activity in the Marine Operations environment while supervising labor, minimizing costs, ensuring security compliance and maintaining cargo movement within specific standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate all marine activities with fleet team, Alaska area contractors and barge companies to ensure outstanding customer service levels while meeting production and cost goals.
  • Direct and supervise ILWU steady yard foremen and hall longshore labor.
  • Participate in all aspects of the operations to include local equipment management, container yards, marine operations, hiring of gangs, disciplinary actions/complaint handling and employer representative on the disciplinary and strength and agility committees for the local JPLRC.
  • Effectively lead and administer functional marine and CY teams, security compliance and accident reporting.
  • Work day/night shifts as required by rotation/necessity of changing business environment. Be available to assist on after hours calls to support a 24/7 operation.
  • Track and analyze key operating standards and measures for cost/productivity management.
  • Review, input and approve for payment all marine and CY labor timesheets.
  • Participate in cross-functional training within the department including but not limited to dispatching, outside superintendent, inside superintendent, shift manager and specific administration duties.
  • Coordinate bookings for weekly line haul.
  • Coordinate barge cargo being moved throughout Alaska.
  • Coordinate labor for yard and barge/vessel operations.
  • Coordinate boat offloads and any special projects.
  • Ensure customers questions are being answered timely per CMA terminals Alaska standards.
  • Work with planners on the discharge/load-back and restowed cargo to create a plan for weekly line haul vessel. Occasionally 2 linehaul vessels a week depending on volumes during the busy season.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • In-depth knowledge of labor contracts, preferably ILWU AALA and PCMSC.
  • Knowledge of stevedoring, ship-side cargo handling techniques.
  • West Bound stow pattern knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of Alaska outport locations.
  • Knowledge of barge operations.
  • Knowledge of Terminal Operating System and Tools.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years industry experience with a minimum of 4 years supervisory experience working with labor union of significant size to include labor relations, ILWU specific preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to walk up and down gangway and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Work may require frequent exposure to the elements including extreme cold, snow, sleet and wind.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to walk short distances, lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be available and willing to work days, nights, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Willingness to submit to pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Compliance with CMA Terminals Alaska Drug Free Workplace Policies
  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
