POSITION SUMMARY

 

This position is accountable for providing marine project leadership and direction to Orion Marine Construction Gulf Coast region projects. The incumbent reports to the VP or Construction Manager, and directs field activities through the Foremen who report to this position.  They are influential in the hiring, firing, advancement, and promotion of other employees.  Typically, this individual will work closely with the VP, Project Managers, Barge Foremen, Project (Field) Engineer, Safety Representative, Boat Captain, Pile Drivers, Welders, Carpenters, Laborers and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the work site.   

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Works closely with management to plan and execute marine projects and ensure their successful completion.
  • Coordinates project objectives and plans with Foremen and sets up project management team prior to actual construction.
  • Works with members of the project team to secure the equipment necessary for the project.
  • Attends pre-construction and construction meetings to monitor progress on the various on-going projects.
  • Troubleshoots and problem solves as required on construction issues and problems that arise.
  • Holds Foremen accountable for meeting construction project deadlines and making sure that project work is completed on time.
  • Provides input in the hiring, firing, advancement, and promotion of other employees.
  • Monitors project work expenditures versus projected costs for materials and supplies that are purchased and that project expenditures are under budget.
  • Performs periodic inspections of the jobsites to ensure that standardized construction procedures are followed.
  • Attends weekly Project Manager Meetings to discuss job progress and any problems that are currently being encountered.
  • Holds all employees at the jobsite accountable for complying with Orion Safety / Operational Policies and mandated regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensures that new workers receive safety training and as required, job specific training prior to beginning their field assignments.
  • Promotes safe work practices and programs and encourages all employees to demonstrate compliance with all Safety policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with the Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, Laborers and other skilled and semi-skilled crafts persons to complete current projects in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPENTENCIES

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

A minimum of ten (10) years marine construction experience on work barges or equivalent experience in a marine construction supervisory capacity.  Incumbents must be well-versed in receiving and handling of equipment used for marine operations.  In addition, incumbents must have knowledge of the integration of various crafts to successfully perform their work.  Craft knowledge should include piledriving, crane operations, welding, carpentry, sandblasting, pipefitting and related areas.  Incumbents should also possess previous supervisory experience and be certified in First Aid/CPR.   

The incumbent must also 1) be well organized in order to effectively oversee multiple projects, 2) be able to hold Foreman and their crews accountable for safe work practices and work performance excellence, 3) be able to influence and motivate Foreman and members of their project teams, and 4) possess excellent communication skills. 

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace.  Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. 

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.  This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate. 

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

 

In addition, the Superintendent must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Working in confined spaces or at elevated heights
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs. as required
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident
  • Be qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites
  • Overnight travel may be required
