Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) engages and supports the faculty, students and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. CCPS strengthens the university's public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.
Position Summary
The Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) engages and supports the faculty, students and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. CCPS strengthens the university's public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.
This position will work with a variety of programs managed by CCPS, providing them with an opportunity to complete different tasks and strengthen many different skills, including event planning, program management, assessment, student support, technology development, and student recruitment. This position is great for any graduate students looking for a summer experience with higher education Community Engagement programs.
They will support the implementation and development of the following programs:
The SECU Public Fellows Internship program, made possible by a grant from the SECU Foundation, provides the opportunity for 20 UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students to be hired as interns with a community or government organization in North Carolina.
SMART Mentoring engages Carolina undergraduate students and local elementary and middle-school students in mentoring relationships through a partnership with the local organization, Volunteers for Youth. Over the summer, CCPS recruits and interviews students to participate in the following Fall to Spring semester.
Buckley Public Service Scholars (BPSS) provides a framework for Carolina undergraduate students committed to making a positive impact through service. While completing the program components, participants build portfolios reflecting their learning and unique experiences. We are currently transitioning our BPSS portfolio to GivePulse, an online database that tracks the collective impact, activities and engagement of both organizations and individuals within the community.
This Summer Community Engagement Coordinator will work directly with CCPS Program Officer Katelyn Bodwell, community partner supervisors, undergraduate students, and occasionally with other staff within CCPS. 
Job Responsibilities:
1. Facilitation & Event Planning (20%)
Help plan monthly virtual or in-person learning sessions for SECU Public Fellows Undergraduate Interns, including assisting with guest speaker communication, ordering catering, etc.
Help facilitate sessions as needed on a variety of topics to be determined by the planning team, potentially including resume writing, ethical partnerships, interviewing tips, values, and/or career alignment.
Manage Zoom meetings, including setting up breakout rooms and interactive aspects
Plan a post-internship reflection dinner to be held when students return for fall semester
2. Program Management & Assessment (20%)
Develop surveys to assess the effectiveness and satisfaction of programs
Ensure proper filing of internship forms, assessment data, and spreadsheets
Prepare templates for intern and partner site reports and track relevant information to prepare final report to SECU Foundation
3. SECU Public Fellows Student Support (10%)
Support interns throughout their internship experience, offering 1:1 meetings or calls to discuss any issues or concerns and offer consistent support.
Manage student hours tracking on GivePulse and review reflections submitted
4. Technology Development (10%)
Assist with the transition of the Buckley Public Service Scholars portfolio to GivePulse, including creating spreadsheets, data syncing
Provide input and feedback on user experience in the new portfolio
Conduct assessment and reviews on the technology
5. Student Recruitment for SMART Mentoring (10%)
Partner with Volunteers for Youth to develop a recruitment plan for students.
Develop flyers and conduct outreach to recruit students.
Work with the team to organize and conduct interviews of student mentors.
Assist the Volunteers for Youth team with matching UNC students with mentees.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
