Job description

Position Type: Seasonal (Full-Time)

The Museum’s 45-acre campus is comprised of 39 buildings, 25 of which are historic and were relocated to the Museum. Among the most beloved attractions on the campus are the Shaker design Round Barn, a General Store, a carousel, and the 220-foot sidewheel steamboat Ticonderoga. Visitors enjoy strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds with 22 gardens. The Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education features changing exhibitions and Webb Gallery features important American paintings by Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, Grandma Moses, John Singleton Copley and many more.

Position Description:

In this fast-paced, hands-on position, successful candidates will work primarily as camp educators in our visual art-focused Summer Camps for children ages 4-15. Each camp day will consist of creative and engaging art-making activities, museum exploration, outdoor play, and games.

Key Functions and Demands:

· The position runs from Monday, June 17th through Tuesday, August 13th, 2024. This commitment will include one week of pre-camp training, 5 weeks of camp programs, and planning/prep/clean-up days.

· Shifts are 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday, though other hours may be requested.

· Program Assistants may also be assigned other education department duties, such as assisting with occasional weekend and evening family and public programs.

· With support from the education department leaders, Program Assistants will assist in planning, delivering, and leading a variety of camp programs for children.

· Summer programming will take place in multi-level sites with stairs and across museum grounds.

Education and Experience:

· A minimum of a high school diploma and some college coursework in education, museum studies, studio art, art history, history or a related field is required.

· Prior experience working with children in recreational, academic, or other learning environments, such as schools, camps, museums, childcare centers, etc., is desirable.

· Art instructional experience with children is highly desirable.

Qualifications:

· Must be at least 18 years of age.

· Valid driver’s license helpful.

· Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with supervisors, fellow interns, other members of the education department and with staff from across the museum.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable communicating with parents/guardians of campers.

· Flexibility and the ability to successfully juggle multiple responsibilities.

· Some experience in creating with a variety of artistic mediums or a willingness to learn is desirable.
