JOB PURPOSE
1.) Weekly Camps: Apprentices will lead and teach daily summer camps for students ages 4-12, fostering creativity and growth in young minds.
2.) TUTS Texas All State Musical: Apprentices will help launch the inaugural TUTS Texas All State Musical, a two-week overnight "camp" comprised of over 70 students from across the state of Texas all working together to produce Les Miserables in Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on July 6, 2024.
Apprentices will benefit from comprehensive training, workshops, and mentorships, enhancing skills in artistry, content development, developmental theory, classroom management, production, and performance.
Apprentices will thrive in a supportive learning environment, collaborating daily with the Theatre Under The Stars education team, fellow teaching artists, Broadway professionals, and creative team members. Together, they will work towards achieving program goals, ensuring a valuable and enriching experience for all involved.
PRIMARY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

- Learn and gain experience in child development theory with students of all abilities.
- Enhance professional development through operational, logistical, organizational, technological, creative, and administrative skills.
- Learn through an experiential environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching a specified class in our day rotation for our Theatre Under The Stars Summer Camps at the Humphrey School for Musical Theatre.
- Possibility to teach specified classes in musical theater with a TUTS program for students with disabilities.
- Help design and implement age-appropriate syllabus/lesson plans for specified musical theatre summer camps between ages 4-12.
- Serve as a creative team member for the 2-week TUTS Texas All-State Musical. (Assistant Director, Assistant Music Director, Choreographer, Stage Manager, etc.)
- Attend scheduled Arts Apprenticeship training sessions, meetings, possible CPR certification, and occasional special events.
- Submit written lesson plans, assessments, rehearsal reports, production materials, attendance/sign in & out sheets, and timesheets.
- Prepare materials, coordinate, and obtain equipment and supplies needed for classes and/or rehearsals.
- Be present for all production dates and tech rehearsals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preference to students who are in pursuit and have completed at least one year of an undergraduate program (BFA, BA, BM, or MFA, MEd, MA) with a focus in musical theater performance, Arts Education, stage management, etc.
Must be available during the following 10 weeks:
- May 16, 2024: (Time TBD) Orientation Virtual Meeting
- May 20, 2024: 6pm. Texas All State Mandatory Virtual Meeting
- May 28 – May 31, 2024: 9am – 5pm (Training Week)
- June 3 – 7, 2024: 8am – 5pm (Camp Week 1)
- June 10 – 14, 2024: 8am – 4pm (Camp Week 2)
* June 17, 18, 20, 21, 2024*: 8am – 5pm (Camp Week 3) ****No Camp on Juneteenth Holiday 6/19/2
- June 23 – July 6, 2024 – TX All State Musical (2-Weeks) APPRENTICES WILL BE HOUSED ON CAMPUS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON DURING THIS TIME
- July 8 – 12, 2024: 8am – 4pm (Camp Week 4)
- July 15 – 19, 2024: 8am – 5pm (Camp Week 5)
- July 22 – 26, 2024: 8am – 4pm (Camp Week 6)
- July 29 – Aug. 2, 2024: 8am – 4pm (Camp Week 7)
- August 2, 2024: Inclusive Arts Showcase
APPRENTICESHIP COMPENSATION
The apprentice will work on average 35-40 hours per week and receive weekly pay of $600.00.
