VANCE CHARTER SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Substitute Arrive at school promptly no later than 7:35 AM for K-8 and 8:00 AM for 9-12. Earlier arrival, if possible, will allow the SUBSTITUTE TEACHER to review lesson plans and the schedule and prepare for the day. Sign the Substitute Teacher sign-in binder upon arrival and sign out at the end of the day.
A binder will be located in the office of the K-8 and high school buildings. Each substitute will have a sheet with their name on it and will print the date along with the teacher name they are subbing for that day. Dress in professional attire.
Follow the lesson plans and schedule left by the teacher. Use good behavior management practices and adhere to the school discipline procedures. The office shall be contacted immediately with discipline infractions consistent with Level 2 offenses or higher.
An office referral should be completed as soon as possible. Never threaten corporal punishment or touch a child in response to a discipline problem. Observe strict rules of confidentiality.
Never share privileged information about the school, its employees, students, or their families. Substitute teachers are employees and should maintain confidentiality at all times, even when they are not actively working in the school. Maintain a professional demeanor at all times while working at the school.
Never allow students to call them by their first name or family names even if they are relatives or friends. While working at school, all teachers, including SUBSTITUTE TEACHERs, will be referred to by students as Mr., Ms., or Mrs. [last name].
Maintain a positive demeanor with students; practice patience, honesty, and a sense of humor. Avoid using any sarcastic tone or off-color humor with students. A Substitute Teacher should not collect or receipt monies.
Supervise students at all times. Classes should ever be left unattended. In case of emergency, send a responsible student to the next door classroom teacher's room to alert him or her of the problem and call the office and ask for an adult to report to the classroom to help.
Tidy up the classroom at the end of the day - try to leave it as it was at the beginning of the day. Leave the teacher a note with any concerns.
