Position Summary
The recruitment is to fill three part-time (less than 24 hours per week) Student Laboratory Assistant positions for the Garcia-Jaramillo Lab in the Environmental and Molecular Toxicology Department at Oregon State University.
This position requires performing routine complex technical and specialized tasks, including liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy work, cell culture, bioassays, data processing, and handling toxic substances under strict safety operational procedures. The individual must be hard working, detail oriented, willing to meet deadlines, adaptable, and able to multi-task. As well, the individual must have an interest and demonstrated skills in scientific writing.
Position Duties
50% - Sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data processing
  • Sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data processing, related to other projects led by PhD students or Postdocs at the lab, or projects assigned by faculty research assistants or PI to the student.

30% - Review of current literature and writing a review manuscript
  • Student is expected to work with the PI to identify a research topic, compile current literature available, and write a review article, under the guidance and supervision of Faculty research assistants and PI.

10% - Laboratory Maintenance and Support
  • Inventory management
  • Maintains the replenishing of supplies
  • Help with glassware cleaning
  • Prepare records of supplies received, and unpack, restock, and rotate stock on hand
  • Anticipate when inventory is running low for the lab and notify Lab Manager and PI immediately
  • Help maintain the collection, sorting, labeling, and storage of chemical waste following EH&S protocols
  • Maintains the overall cleanliness and order in the solutions and chemicals room, freezers and fridges, and LCMS room.
  • Empty and replace the glass waste bins and recycle containers on a regular basis, keep laboratory benches and instruments clean.

10% Preparing reports and presentations and attend weekly lab meetings.
  • As requested, the student will report results and update the PI and Lab Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • 0.5 year of experience in a research laboratory using analytical instrumentation for the analysis of organic compounds, and/or experience with bioassays and cell culture.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
