Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Laboratory TechnicianTanguay Lab for Environmental & Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University (OSU).
Join the Tanguay Lab at the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, Oregon State University, and become part of cutting-edge research in zebrafish high throughput screening. The research facility is located off campus at Sinnhuber Aquatic Research Laboratory. We are seeking up to two highly motivated Research Laboratory Technician to spearhead our zebrafish high throughput screening operation. This role demands a self-starter with a keen focus on executing routine complex technical tasks while interacting with instruments, including microscope work to evaluate the morphology of zebrafish embryos. The successful candidate will utilize computer programs, automation robots, and instrumentation such as liquid handling systems, imagers, and microscopes.
The successful candidate will drive the screening operation forward, demonstrating initiative, precision, and attention to detail. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in a dynamic laboratory environment.

Position Duties
70% High Throughput Screening Laboratory Work:
  • Conduct routine complex technical tasks related to high throughput screening of zebrafish embryos.
  • Utilize computer programs for data analysis and experiment control.
  • Utilize advanced instrumentation including liquid handling systems, imagers, and microscopes.
  • Handle adult zebrafish with care and precision.
  • Collaborate with team members to coordinate tasks and ensure the smooth completion of experiments.
Automation and Instrumentation
  • Operate automation robots for efficient execution of screening protocols.
  • Monitor and maintain automated systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot automation issues and collaborate with technical staff for resolution.
  • Utilize instrumentation such as liquid handling systems, imagers, and microscopes for data collection and analysis.
  • Implement protocols for the calibration and maintenance of automated equipment.
  • Stay updated on emerging automation technologies and contribute to the optimization of laboratory workflows.
30% General Operation Related:
  • Assist with the maintenance of zebrafish tanks, including tank changes and water quality monitoring.
  • Support various laboratory tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and labeling to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Enrollment in an undergraduate program at Oregon State University, preferably in a relevant field such as biology, environmental science, or molecular toxicology.
  • Strong interest in scientific research and a willingness to learn new techniques and procedures.
  • Comfortable working with technology and automation systems.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work accurately under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Transportation to Sinnhuber Aquatic Research Laboratory and availability for extended periods of time required.
  • Able to lift/carry up to 20 pounds (fish tanks)
  • Need to be able to work for at least 3 hour time periods or available in the mornings (before 11)
  • Weekend hours are required.
  • Must be here during the summer term.
