GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under limited supervision, inspects new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance to the Florida Building Code and City Codes. Observes conditions and issues notices for corrections to persons responsible for conformance. Examines plans submitted for permits to determine conformity with regulations. Reports to Chief Structural Inspector or designee.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspects residential, commercial, industrial and other buildings during and after construction to ensure that components including but not limited to trusses, footings, floor framing, completed framing, chimneys and stairways meet provisions of building, grading, zoning and safety laws and approved plan, specifications and standards for the promotion of consumer/public safety and welfare.
• Reviews building plans for code compliance and coding for pricing; approves or denies permits for the structural division.
• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals involved in the operations of the Department including other departmental personnel, engineers, contractors, architects, homeowners, workers and business owners in order to explain and interpret codes and regulations regarding construction, alteration and repair of buildings as designated by the Board of Rules and Appeals.
• Reviews building codes in order to keep abreast of any changes in regulations. Refers to code books to interpret legal requirements and recommend compliance procedures to engineers, contractors, workers, architects and owners.
• Observes conditions and issues notices for corrections to persons responsible for conformance. Obtains evidence and prepares reports concerning violations which have not been corrected.
• Keeps inspection records and prepares reports for use by administrative or judicial authorities.
• Coordinates and routes the inspection tickets on a daily basis.
• Attends Special Master's Hearings and presents cases in the structural discipline.
• Utilizes an assortment of machinery and equipment in the performance of daily tasks including an automobile, computer, facsimile, copier, calculator, printer, scanner, cell phone and telephone.
• Attends training as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs other related duties as required by the Chief Structural Inspector and/or Director of Building.

Minimum Training and Experience
Requires high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license, and possess at least one of the following requirements:
A Florida Registered Architect or Registered Professional Engineer in the discipline requested and having practiced within the jurisdiction of this Code for at least two (2) years;
OR
Five (5) years construction experience in the Structural discipline in a supervisory capacity of which at least two (2) years shall have been within a High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) or by passing BORA's HVHZ exam; and possessing a current Certificate of Competency as a General Contractor issued by:
(1) Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board.
(2) Broward County Central Examining Board Certificate of Competency as Class "A" Unlimited General Contractor.
(3) Dade County, Block proctored, issued on or after January 1, 1968.
(4) Any other proctored examination graded by an independent testing agency approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals.
Additionally, requires certification as a Structural Inspector and Structural Plans Examiner as provided for in F.S. 468.607 and shall be certified by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
NOTE: An applicant who is a graduate from an accredited school holding a Bachelor or Associate of Science Degree in Engineering, Architecture or Building Construction may be credited for three (3) years for the Bachelors Degree, or one (1) year for an Associates Degree, of the required five-year experience.
