Summary:


  • This position reports directly to the Director of Surgical Services and is responsible for the development and direction of all phases of the technical and operational activities of Chester County Hospital SPD. The Manager will collaborate with off campus sites that transfer instrumentation to CCH SPD for reprocessing such as, but not limited to, The Wound Care Center, Cancer Center, Endoscopy, ED, Cath Lab, and Nursing units.
  • The Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for the personnel, financial, and operational activities for the Sterile Processing Department. Responsible for the educational and orientation needs of the Sterile Processing Department. Provides immediate oversight and onsite assistance for educational preceptorship of new staff members, customers, and students. Responds to immediate needs of the Instrument Processing staff related to patient care and instrumentation. This position will enforce compliance with all Infection Control, Joint Commission, DOH, SGNA, federal, state, local, hospital, and department regulations.
  • Collaborates with Surgery leadership and staff to provide technical direction for the operations and ensure instrumentation needs are met daily.
  • This position will be responsible for the selection, orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of all reporting employees. This position supervises all activities of the Instrument Processing Technologists. Provides direction and oversight for decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing of surgical instrumentation. The incumbent is accountable for the facilitation of common goals within the department, independent daily assignment duties, and for project duties as assigned within the department. The Manager in this role is also responsible for compilation and reporting of departmental productivity measures and act as a lead for department quality initiatives and education.

Responsibilities:


  • Provide consultation to supervisors in resolution of complex administrative issues. Provide leadership and oversight to supervisors, coordinators and technicians to ensure high level of customer satisfaction and fiscal responsibilities. Serves as a resource to the surgical services team and healthcare facility systems committees, regarding sterilization process, procedures and assists in changes as needed.
  • Establish and maintain liaison with Operating Room associates, physicians, surgeons, nurses and other professional associates to provide consultation on product specifications and to advise availability of materials for specific patient care and/or treatment/procedures.
  • Ensures that the policies, procedures, and practices comply with the standards established by regulatory agencies.
  • Serves as a resource to enhance customer satisfaction, achieve optimal utilization and reduce costs. Assist in the evaluation of new products and patient equipment through membership on various committees.
  • Ensure appropriate allocation of personnel to meet staffing and scheduling needs: assists subordinate leaders in resolving associate relation issues. Ensures staffing patterns and monthly schedules meet department needs and are in line with labor tracking standards.
  • Drives operational integration with other clinical and entity leadership and ensures alignment.
  • Responsible for ensuring that patient care is uninterrupted by maintaining quality and safety through accurate and adequate levels of inventory in SPD.
  • Establish and maintain sterilization, safety and security standards, policies and procedures for Sterile Processing to ensure compliance with AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, EPA, FDA, Joint Commission and state and local regulations. Advocates for and participates in continual process improvement. Responsible for quality measures within the department.
  • Responsible for performance improvement activities in the department, development of action plans, and follow-up; participates in system wide committees related to sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection; and is knowledgeable about regulatory standards and national society standards related to Sterile Processing. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Oversight in interpreting and developing daily re-processing plan relative to published clinical schedule of cases.
  • Oversight, monitoring and prioritization of decontamination, preparation, and high-level disinfection/sterilization of endoscopes and ancillary items.
  • Oversight of instrument processing, endoscope and sterilization quality audits.
  • Interface with all customers for high-level disinfection processes.
  • Oversight of staff and processes to provide flexible endoscope reprocessing and high-level disinfection to all customers.
  • Ensures cost efficient management of staff, goods, and supplies.
  • Responsible for the preparation of operating and capital budgets for instrument processing.
  • Prepares and approves as appropriate, departmental staffing payroll.
  • Responsible for hiring, termination, promotion, and discipline of employees.
  • Evaluates staff, generates and performs probationary and/or annual performance reviews.
  • Serves as content expert for all instrument processing, high-level disinfection, and endoscope reprocessing.
  • Oversees the support of OR service lines and procedure areas.
  • Oversees the operation and troubleshooting of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization equipment.
  • Directs the processing of instruments and medical devices from various accounts.
  • Ensures tracking paperwork and customer charges are correct.
  • Ensures the database of the instrument tracking system is maintained and accurate.
  • Maintains records to keep abreast of performance and achievement of departmental goals.
  • Establishes and updates standards of supplies, chemicals, and materials used in the area of responsibility.
  • Develops professional and ethical relationships with staff, customers, and vendors through communication and collaboration.
  • Interacts closely with the Surgical Services, Infection Prevention, Risk Management and Safety departments to identify and mitigate potential patient safety issues.
  • Follows up on recalls if any items do not meet the standards for sterilization.
  • Responsible for acting quickly, accurately and with a high level of expertise to address complex special projects, which present themselves on a regular basis.

Credentials:


  • IAHCSMM or CBSPD
  • Central Service Certification: IAHCSMM or CBSPD
  • IAHCSMM or CBSPD
  • CHL- CS Management (IAHCSMM) or CSPM – CS Management (CBSPD)

Education or Equivalent Experience:


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
  • Healthcare Related field5+ years Proven Sterile Processing experience in a hospital setting or successful completion of a Sterile Processing program.
  • Master of Arts or Science
  • MHA or MSN
