Position Summary:
Oversees the daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies, scopes and instrumentation including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes within all set professional standards and regulations. Duties include staff supervision, quality assurance, scheduling, monitoring workflow and preparing productivity reports.
Job Requirement
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years experience in a Sterile Processing and Sterilization unit of an acute care hospital performing sterilization functions, two (2) years of which were at a lead or a supervisor level.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification.
Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
Knowledge of:
Basic medical terminology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, and the fundamental principles of infection control; decontamination and sterilization of patient care supplies; methods and techniques of sterilization; standard purchase and hospital Sterile Processing operations; instrumentation of various surgical specialties; federal, state, and local standards and regulations for Sterile Processing and aseptic measures; the use of medical supplies and equipment common to an acute care hospital; principles of storage to ensure quality assurance of medical supplies and equipment; transmission or micro-biological diseases and their prevention; pathogens and the means for destroying them through steam, gas and cold sterilization; department and hospital safety practice and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Effectively supervising assigned staff; facilitating resolution of conflicts among staff; applying budget principles and practices; working independently and, at times, unaccompanied; supervise, evaluate and train staff; monitor the work of subordinates including the planning, assigning and reviewing of their work; make and adjust work schedules; translating various quality assurance indicators associated with the sterilization process such as biological, chemical and mechanical indicators; identifying and implementing performance standards; problem solving; organizing and prioritizing among conflicting priorities; applying team building concepts; facilitating groups; performing statistical analysis; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for extended periods of time; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
