Stellar Farmers Markets Bilingual Educators (Spanish)
(DOHMH) Part-time, Temporary (June 12th- November 18th)
The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
Program Overview
The Healthy Eating Unit within the New York City Department of Health and MentalHygiene's (DOHMH) Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention is seeking up to6part-time, temporary, Bilingual Educators (Spanish) to implement Just Say Yesto Fruits and Vegetables Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM),a program funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education(SNAP-Ed) via a contract with New York State Health Department. SFM providesnutrition education and food workshops to the public at Farmers Markets thatserve New Yorkers with low incomes. The goal of SFM is to increase consumptionof fruits and vegetables by building knowledge and skills about healthy eating.
Thisposition will be housed within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP)which strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease, including heart disease,obesity, and cancer, among New Yorkers. We work to address the impact ofstructural racism and other injustices that are a root cause of the inequitableprevalence, treatment and outcomes of chronic diseases in communities of colorand among other marginalized communities. BCDP focuses on nutrition, tobaccouse, the built environment, screening for cancer, and reducing the incidenceand impact of hypertension. BCDP works with partners in government and thecommunity to employ evidence-based policies, programs, communications, andresearch aimed at shifting environments, changing systems and promoting healthequity. The Bureau sits within the Center for Health Equity and CommunityWellness.
Position Overview
Bilingual Educators fluent in English/Spanish will work as part of a team of three tofour people in the preparation and delivery of nutrition and cooking workshopsat Farmers Markets or potentially virtual workshops from July-November 2023.Bilingual Educators are also encouraged to attend three monthly meetings duringthe season which will be held on Monday afternoons at the DOHMH office in LongIsland City, Queens. The Bilingual Educator will report to the NutritionEducator (onsite team leader) and JSY Nutrition Project Coordinator. BilingualEducators will be responsible for ensuring accurate and fluent interpretation(verbal) during workshops, and if able, translating (writing) some writtendisplayed signage and educational messaging. They will also be responsible forassisting the Nutrition Educator with survey distribution and completion andassisting the Culinary Educator with food preparation tasks in betweenworkshops. This paid position is part-time and seasonal to coincide with theregional growing season. Bilingual Educators will be required to attend a paid5-day training from June 12th-June 16th, 2023 and commit to working aminimum of 2 days per week, including one weekend day for the durationof the season, and attending monthly meetings. Monthly meetings will beheld one time a month, in person at our Long Island City office on Mondayafternoons (monthly meetings are required for new staff and highly encouragedfor returning staff). Bilingual Educators' hours depend upon and coincide withmarket schedules.
Responsibilities
• Prepare for and orally interpret in-person nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations from English to Spanish.
• Collaborate with a team of three or more at each workshop site which includes a Nutrition Educator, responsible for leading the team and implementing the nutrition education lesson, and a Culinary Educator, responsible for implementing the cooking demonstration.
• Assist with and ensure proper set-up and breakdown of tent, cooking equipment and educational materials.
• Assist with the preparation and implementation of nutrition education sessions.
• Follow curriculum and ensure integrity and fidelity of programming.
• Market and promote program at Farmers Markets to ensure minimum required level of participation is achieved.
• Assist with data collection at markets.
• Maintain all safety protocols at workshop sites.
• Maintain and encourage environmentally sustainable practices at workshop sites
• Assist with food preparation for cooking demonstrations, as needed
Required Qualifications and Skills
• Oral fluency in Spanish
• Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communications skills
• Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations
• Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather conditions
• Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds (to and from storage site to workshop location on a weekly basis each market day)
• Commitment to a minimum of 2 days per week of work, including one weekend day
• Commitment to attending in-person monthly meetings held at our DOHMH office in Long Island City, Queens (for non-returning staff)
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
Ability to write in Spanish.
Experience interpreting information orally and translating written materials from English to Spanish
Experience working as part of a team
Understanding of and experience with regional food systems and food security issues and theunderlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities
Strong preference will be given to those with knowledge about and interest innutrition and community food security issues in NYC
COMPENSATION
The part-time position will be hired through a staffing agency at a pay rate of $22per hour from June 12th- November 18th.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is not a remote job. Most, if not all, responsibilities require onsite or inoffice work. This position will be hired through a staffing agency.
This position will require onsite work at Farmers Markets across NYC to conductnutrition education workshops and trainings and weekly Monday morning meetingsat the NYC Health Department office in Long Island City, Queens.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
You must live in New York City Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) in order to be considered fora position at FPHNYC.
