(DOHMH) Part-time, Temporary (June 12th - November 18th)
The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives.These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW (Please list Grant Name and Location)
The Healthy Eating Unit within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's (DOHMH) Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention is seeking up to 2 part-time, temporary, Bilingual Educators (Bengali) to implement Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM), a program funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) via a contract with New York State Health Department. SFM provides nutritioneducation and food workshops to the public at Farmers Markets that serve New Yorkers with low incomes. The goal of SFM is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by building knowledge and skills about healthy eating.
This position will be housed within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) which strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease, including heart disease, obesity, and cancer, among New Yorkers. We work to address the impact of structural racism and other injustices that are a root cause of the inequitable prevalence, treatment and outcomes of chronic diseases in communities of color and among other marginalized communities. BCDP focuses on nutrition, tobacco use, the built environment, screening for cancer, and reducing the incidence and impact of hypertension. BCDP works with partners in government and the community to employ evidence-based policies, programs, communications and research aimed at shifting environments, changing systems and promoting health equity. The Bureau sits within the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness.
Bilingual Educators fluent in Bengali will work as part of a team of three to four people in the preparation and delivery of nutrition and cooking workshops at Farmers Markets or potentiallyvirtual workshops from July-November 2023. Bilingual Educators are also encouraged to attend three monthly meetings during the season which will be held on Monday afternoons at the DOHMH office in Long Island City, Queens. The Bilingual Educator will report to the Nutrition Educator (onsite team leader) and JSY Nutrition Project Coordinator. Bilingual Educators will be responsible for ensuring accurate and fluent interpretation (verbal) during workshops, and if able, translating (writing) some written displayed signage and educational messaging. They will also be responsible for assisting the Nutrition Educator with survey distribution and completion and assisting the Culinary Educator with food preparation tasks in between workshops. Thispaid position is part-time and seasonal to coincide with the regional growing season. Bilingual Educators will be required to attend a paid 5-day training from June 12th-June 16th, 2023 and commit to working a minimum of 1-2 days per week, including one weekend dayfor the duration of the season, and attending monthly meetings. Monthly meetings will be held one time a month, in person at our Long Island City office on Monday afternoons (monthly meetings are required for new staff and highly encouraged for returning staff). Bilingual Educators' hours depend upon and coincide with market schedules.
POSITION OVERVIEW

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist coordinator with preparing for program implementation, both in-person and virtual; planning and preparing for educator training; and ensuring equipment for implementation is ready.
  • Assist manager and coordinator with planning and conducting weekly educator meetings, ensuring equipment is stored properly and available for educators, drafting and sending weekly communications to educators; troubleshooting educator needs, as applicable, and conducting onsite training and visits.
  • Coordinate and schedule virtual partner workshops
  • Conduct SFM workshops, virtually or at Farmers Markets, as needed.
  • Assist coordinator in post season activities (including curriculum revisions and updates and conducting inventory of program supplies) and work on special projects to support the program, as needed.
  • Maintain and ensure that all safety protocols are being followed
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition or in public health
  • 1 year of experience conducting nutrition education in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically and socioeconomically diverse populations
  • Excellent written, communication, and organizational skills
  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation skills and experience, in particular delivering virtual nutrition workshops
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course (prior to June 12th, 2022)
  • Commitment to a minimum of 3 days per week of work (Mondays are required)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants with previous experience working with SFM
  • Registered Dietitian
  • Experience working with a team in a leadership role
  • Knowledgeable about Farmers Markets, regional food systems and community food security issues in NYC
  • Basic culinary knowledge and skills

SALARY
The part-time position will be hired through a staffing agency at a pay rate of $28 per hourfrom May 22nd through December 1st.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
You must live in New York City Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) in order to be considered for aposition at FPHNYC.
