Duties

As a Statistician (Health), you will:

  • Plan and conduct multiple research studies focused on the causes, incidence and cost of accidents, disease and disabling illness.
  • Initiate, formulate, plan and execute analytic research projects pertinent to the activities of the organization and research the quality of methodologies and measures pertinent to the assessment and summarization of the health status of Americans.
  • Plan and carry out quality control programs and select appropriate statistical and epidemiologic methods to be used in quality control analysis.
  • Provide technical assistance to other professionals on the use of complex statistical and epidemiologic techniques.
  • Examine reports and articles prepared by others within the organization as part of the peer review process.
  • Serve as technical expert with respect to all phases of statistical interpretation relating to epidemiologic topics under consideration.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports of study results which include discussion of substantive health issues and research objectives.
  • Disseminate results of research projects in a wide range of venues including publications, peer reviewed journals, summaries, manuscripts, and special reports.
  • Present results to the scientific community at professional meetings and conferences.

Qualifications Basic Qualifications:
  1. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: planning and conducting multiple research studies focused on the causes, incidence and cost of accidents, disease and disabling illness.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative applicant drug test result. In order to demonstrate commitment to the HHS goal of a drug-free workplace and to set an example for other Federal employees, employees not in a testing designated position may volunteer for unannounced random testing by notifying their Drug-free Federal Workplace Program Point of Contact upon hiring.

Former and present Peace Corps personnel may be considered to fill vacancies.
