Job description

Performs investigate work, counseling, and administrative work to provide victim assistance service to victims of Sexual Assault, stalking, dating/ teen dating violence and Domestic Violence and their families, and to establish and maintain an effective Victims Services Program. Provides evaluation services, referral, brief counseling, and case management services to victims and their families, Investigates, coordinates with other applicable agencies, conduct public outreach, and assist victims in their recovery. Provides support for officers involved in the investigation of these types of crime to ensure complete and thorough investigation is conducted to gather adequate evidence to prosecute cases. Activities include, but are not limited to, conducting interviews, taking statements, assisting with crime scene photos, evidence collection/processing, and other covert/overt operations.

  • Coordinates the filing of charges with the prosecutor's office, including the filing of protective orders.
  • Conducts investigation of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, dating/teen dating violence, and stalking. Provides brief counseling to victims and families or makes appropriate referrals, providing case management services where indicated. Provides referrals regarding emergency psychiatric services.
  • Assist victims with applications for protective orders.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Webb County Sheriff's Office and other Federal, State, and local agencies.
  • Introduces direct services to primary and secondary victims of violent crime to include all ethnic groups, ages, and genders served by the Webb County Sheriff's Office, including traditionally under served rural areas.
  • Communicates and interacts with regional and/or statewide crisis response teams when assigned to establish and maintain effective working relationships and coordinate actions as appropriate.
  • Refers victims to other local, state, and federal agencies for services. Follow up with assistance to victim's status, assist with preparation for trials.
  • Acts as a liaison with all local Women Shelters.
  • Travels as required to achieve position objectives.
  • Collects and preserves evidence from crime scenes.
  • Submits reports timely to the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), including but not limited to the following: number of persons served, number of persons seeking services that could not be served, number and percentage of arrests relative to the number of responses to Domestic Violence incidents, and number of protection orders issued.
  • Completes all required grant paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Performs any other duties assigned.
* Must have a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
* Must be a peace officer by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement.
  • Must be able to conduct criminal investigations.
  • Must have knowledge of principles and practices of crisis intervention and trauma counseling.
  • Must have knowledge of impact of trauma resulting from crime, sudden death, and other disturbing experiences.
  • Must have knowledge of the criminal justice system procedures, criminal law, civil law, and family code as applicable to victim services.
  • Must be able to collect and report statistics.
  • Must be able to speak in public.
  • Must have skills in crisis intervention and trauma counseling.
  • Must have skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate oral and written.
  • Must be able to maintain written documentation.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain a positive relationship with community agencies and the general public.
  • Must have knowledge of standard office equipment, including a personal computer and software programs.
  • Must be able to communicate in English and Spanish.
