Description:  

The Professional Apprentice Program is a training ground to provide learning and teaching opportunities for Apprentices during their time at the School. The Program recruits a talented group of people to take part in an intensive, hands-on experience, participating in a variety of roles from daily administrative activities to production operations. Apprentices will participate in workshops, discussions and/or other opportunities that will support, develop, and expand on the skills to help them succeed within the workplace and their chosen career paths.

This is a full-time position. The apprentice will assist with the Stage Management responsibilities of events and productions throughout the School. The apprentice will serve as a Production Stage Manager, Calling Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager. They will also have the opportunity to work with Production Shops, Special Events, and the Concert Office. 

 

Salary: $16-$17.75 per hour, or $24,320 - $29,820 annual dependent on contract dates

Role Responsibilities:  

  • Act as liaison among the various personalities involved in a production, including directors, choreographers, student and guest performers, designers, and the Production Department to ensure that all elements of the performance run smoothly. 

  • Prepares all paperwork pertaining to the assigned production, maintaining log of daily rehearsal activity, script changes, technical rehearsals, and performance. 

  • Attends all production meetings, rehearsals and performances to maintain the integrity of the production.   

  • Prepares the rehearsal space for rehearsals as needed. 

  • Prepares the stage for technical rehearsals and performances as needed. 

  • Contact student and guest performers in the event they are delayed.  

  • Addresses and alerts technical difficulties during rehearsals and performances to the appropriate production teams.  

  • Ensure that all choreographed fight and intimacy details are executed safely. 

  • Informs the Director and Program Assistant as to the status of the production. 

  • There will be an opportunity to call a project at least once during the season. 

  • Dance: Under the guidance of the PSM, the apprentice will have the opportunity to call at least one dance piece; learn dance terminology and different tasks that may not already be in the apprentice's toolkit. 

  • Drama: Under the guidance of the Drama Faculty PSMs, the apprentice will learn the responsibilities of a PSM; prepare pre-production and production paperwork, work with the Drama office to properly schedule rehearsals as necessary, and other activities dependent on the needs of the assigned project. 

  • Events: Under the guidance of the Production Department's Production Management and Recital Operations teams, the apprentice will learn different types of concerts that are supported in the venues of the School; there may be times the apprentice will work with Office of the President Special Projects. 

  • There may be opportunities in the season to work with the Production Shops based on the interest of the stage manager; these work calls will be arranged in cooperation with the Director and the Shop that the apprentice may be interested.  

  • Fulfills maintenance and cleaning duties on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis in the Stage Management workspace.  

 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • All apprentices will need basic knowledge of the craft they intend to pursue. As such, we are asking for any of the following training:  Bachelor's Degree; Related professional experience or transferable skills; A combination of both educational or professional experience 

  • Basic knowledge of technical stagecraft and familiarity with the logistics of a theatrical production. 

  •  Demonstrate knowledge of script and stage directions for the production. 

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize effectively.  

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. 

  • Ability to behave in a manner that brings credit to the profession. 

  • Knowledge of proper production safety procedures.  

 

Preferred Background: 

  • Stage Management experience in theater, events, music, opera, or dance.  

  • Ability to read music 

  • Computer knowledge with Q-lab, VectorWorks reader, Adobe products
