About the Role:

G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Deadspin, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Quartz, The A.V. Club, The Root, The Onion, The Takeout and reaches over 100 million unique visitors a month.  We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.

About the role:

KOTAKU, the leading authority on games and gaming culture, is seeking a Staff Writer to join its editorial team. We’re looking for someone with demonstrable passion, expertise, and opinions about video games. You know the big titles, the hidden gems, and retro cult classics, and you’ve logged serious hours playing all of them. On your best days, you’re not just following trends—you’re leading conversations.

As Staff Writer, you’ll be writing about the major games of the moment, as well as evergreen retrospectives and recommendations, keeping in mind that our goal is to grow. How can we keep our core audience engaged, but also invite newbies into our fold? We believe in inclusivity here, and strive to avoid gatekeeping the games we love at all costs.

You’ll be expected to write with verve and enthusiasm about a wide range of games, from offbeat indies to blockbuster franchises. You’ll also be able to speak with authority about a broad variety of game genres, from RPGs and cozy sims to shooters and racers. This position will encompass guides, recommendations, retrospectives, occasional reviews, and consistent coverage of the most anticipated upcoming games on the horizon. You’ll write a lot in this role. It is a position designed to generate lots of quick pieces. You’ll develop versatility, speed and a nose for what your audiences most want to read—crucial skills for any up-and-comer in gaming journalism.

You’ll ideally have some established industry contacts, know the basics of conducting interviews and finding sources, and can be trusted to work with our peers in game development and PR in a respectful and professional manner.

This role reports to the Editor in Chief.

What we’re looking for:

  • A writer with a distinctive voice and demonstrable passion for gaming
  • 1-2 years professional experience writing about games
  • Used to having deadlines and hitting them
  • Eager to explore new games and topics and develop expertise quickly
  • Willing to take assignments (and feedback) from editors, and also able to pitch original angles
  • An attentive eye for the visual elements of a story
  • Experience working with online publishing tool

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E,  with a minimum of $63,000.00 up to a range of $75,000.00 annually, dependent upon years of related experience.
