Description:

Primary Purpose of the Position
Prepare well-written and legally sound drafts of decisions for the Full Commission. Analyze legal documents, including briefs, motions, transcripts, and depositions, and make recommendations consistent with relevant case law. Prepare case summaries and engage in discussion with Commissioners and other Counsel regarding how the issues in the case should be decided. Manage dockets for the chair of the hearing panel, including preparing case materials for use by the panel, informing the parties of the time and date their cases are scheduled to be heard, handling requests from the parties, and resolving administrative issues. Ensure hearings and voting sessions run as efficiently as possible.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
  • Demonstrated legal writing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing legal documents.
  • Demonstrated experience summarizing and applying relevant law to a specific set of facts.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with members of the bar or the public.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a high volume of work.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Juris Doctor from an appropriately accredited institution.
Management Preferences:
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina.
  • Minimum of one year of legal experience, either in practice or an equivalent, such as a clerkship.
  • Experience in the field of workers' compensation law.
