Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Mountain View Tech Center) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role:

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our ECU Mechanical & Thermal Design team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing mechanical and Thermal Design of next generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units). The team is responsible for developing Mechanical and Thermal design of new next gen ECU designs, with math, CAD and analysis. The team also reviews and approves production ECU design changes.  

We are seeking a high-performing Thermal Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of electronics design. You will be responsible for the Thermal Design, development and review of Electrical Controllers and cooling solutions, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of electronics
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.
  • Experience in 3D CAD, 2D drawings, and tolerance analysis, Design for manufacturability, and assembly
  • Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing. Ability to perform thermal analysis (1D or 3D).
  • Experience engaging with electronics manufacturers and Thermal suppliers (like Heat pipe, vacuum chamber, TIM, etc)

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • Master’s degree/PhD in Mechanical / Electrical / Thermal Engineering
  • Strong comprehension of Thermal Design in automotive ECU products, Active participant of Thermal Design forums and standard bodies
  • Knowledge of thermal analysis tools like Star CCM, Flotherm, etc. and 1D tools like Matlab Simulink.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancing standards.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

The salary range for this role is $137,000 to $214,300. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
