Staff Software Engineer

Minitab is looking for a high performingStaff Software Engineer. You will show a high level of autonomy, a professional curiosity, and an eagerness to find new ways to improve the product you are working on. This could involve research into new technologies that could speed up development, or provide the development team better ways to implement and maintain the software. You should be able to teach others on the team new concepts they are not aware of yet and improve all members of the team across the board.

POSITION SUMMARY

Perform software tasks of a highly complex nature which require extensive research and analysis. Act as a subject matter expert for a product or technology used by Minitab. Actively work to increase your software development skills and domain knowledge of Minitab products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Play a key role and provide technical subject matter expertise or domain knowledge in the production of high-quality software products.
• Work independently and support technical leadership in the design, development and testing of new software modules.
• Act as a key resource for complex areas of product features, handle the coordination of simultaneous development tasks. The projects will be of moderate complexity and will involve one or more developers. Interface with other departments and customers as appropriate.
• Work with project manager to develop estimates and create backlog for software development tasks.
• Help identify and define software development tools that simplify development efforts and help make developers and testers more productive.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Mentor Software Engineers in the development of high-quality software. Assist in reviewing code through pull requests of other team members where appropriate.

Assist in the design, implementation and maintenance of automated testing frameworks. Assist in support of continuous integration and build tools where appropriate.

Continue to expand your level of domain expertise or software development skills in one or more key technical areas and function as a resource for others in the department working in those areas.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE

• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, IT or a closely related discipline or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of six (6) years of progressive commercial software development experience.
• Experience in time management regarding project completion.
• High working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Linux, and/or macOS.

The following are desirable:

• Familiarity with web development technologies such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript/ES6/JQuery/PHP and knowledge of web frameworks such as React.js, Angular, Node.js or VueJS.
• Familiarity with cloud platform technologies such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud
• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with common development practices including use of source control, code review tools, continuous integration, command line syntax
• Experience with unit testing frameworks and test-oriented approaches to software development

• Ability to work well in a team of skilled software professionals with the ability to build consensus for new practices and technologies.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and to discern the relevancies, applicability, and usefulness of those technologies to Minitab.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative and solve moderate to complex technical problems.
• Ability and desire to lead small teams and projects, and to mentor other Software Engineers.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receive direct supervision from the Manager, Software Engineering and your project manager regarding work activities.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Mentor other Software Engineers as assigned by the Manager, Software Engineering.

This position can be remote.
