DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, the Staff Research Associate will assist Principal Investigator (PI) in research of cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity in the mammalian nervous system using standard research techniques including cell culture, PCR, DNA/RNA purification, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning, immunocytochemistry, and confocal imaging. Under direction, the incumbent will analyze data and present findings at lab meetings.
In addition, the incumbent will assist with general lab support and maintenance, including preparing solutions, assisting with inventory, stocking and organizing supplies, general cleaning and upkeep, and adherence to all waste disposal and safety protocols. Incumbent may receive task direction from senior level researchers and perform other duties as assigned. When appropriate, the incumbent will have the opportunity to participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical understanding of cell and molecular biology; BS in Biology or Chemistry OR an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA purification, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning) with the ability to carry out a variety of technical procedures with minimal instruction or supervision.
Experience with basic laboratory equipment such as pipetting devices, centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, dishwashers, autoclaves. Skill, ability and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and use of new lab equipment rapidly and as needed.
Experience to perform mathematical calculations including computing molarities, pH’s, etc.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters related to work.
Demonstrated ability to work under supervision or collaboratively on a research project. Ability to maintain a high level of motivation to contribute to cutting edge research, and seek and learn new experimental methods as required.
Demonstrated successful, positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals.
Demonstrated skills to read and follow established lab protocols and work effectively with minimal instruction.
Experience and skill with MS Office programs, filemaking, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase PC skills and knowledge as needed.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, and give oral presentations on the progress of research.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must be willing to work with mice as experimental model.
Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet the needs of research.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
