DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the employee will assist in research on uncovering principles of cellular protein quality control by carrying out various biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biological standard and repetitive procedures regarding zebrafish and mammalian cells.

Standard and repetitive tasks involve imaging larvae and mammalian cells through microscopy (confocal and immunofluorescence), maintaining strains of mutant and transgenic zebrafish along with human cell lines, manipulation of mammalian and zebrafish gene function through genome editing, and genotyping. Responsibilities for laboratory management include tissue culture maintenance, zebrafish care, routine preparation of buffers (when appropriate), laboratory safety, ordering supplies, maintaining common lab equipment, and ensuring the lab is clean, safe, and in compliance with regulations.

Will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed when appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic theoretical and practical knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, and evolution including relevant laboratory techniques, as well as aquaculture/fisheries, genetics, and/or developmental biology as typically acquired through a BS in Biology and one or more years of lab experience in any of the related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to learn how to carry out research projects or portions of research projects with direction from PI or other experienced lab members, including (a) reading and comprehending primary scientific literature; (b) independently planning, organizing, performing, and troubleshooting experiments; (c) interpreting and presenting data.

  • Basic experience in molecular cloning, including PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning, and plasmid preps.

  • Basic experience and ability in mammalian tissue culture

  • Basic knowledge & skill with sterile techniques for bacterial culture.

  • Basic experience with phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy.

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills including the ability to keep clear, accurate, and meticulous records and to interpret and follow written and/or oral protocols.

  • Excellent (English) verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interactions with diverse personalities. Skill to work as part of a research team.

  • Basic experience using laboratory equipment (centrifuges, light microscopes, balances, pH meter, incubators, spectrophotometers, and electrophoresis apparatus).

  • Basic skill and knowledge to proactively maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively.

  • Basic demonstrated knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and demonstrated ability to work independently with a variety of computer applications such as Microsoft Office, with willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed. Skill to set up and maintain computerized databases of plasmid and cell line inventories.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Ability to learn new experimental methods as required. Ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project.

  • High level mathematical computation skills required to maintain accurate data and to prepare reagent solutions.

  • Ability to learn how to inject zebrafish embryos at the 1-cell stage with reliable and consistent results.

  • Basic level of practical competency in the handling, breeding, and rearing of zebrafish.

  • Basic knowledge of the technical underpinnings of maintaining mutant and transgenic zebrafish strains.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Willing and able to work safely with lab chemicals mammalian cell lines and zebrafish.

  • Appropriate physical strength for handling aquaculture equipment.

  • Appropriate dexterity for manipulating zebrafish embryos.

  • Must be willing to be flexible with work hours to include occasional evening or weekend work as required for animal care.

  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
