Departmental Overview
The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. A key focus of the IGI is accelerating the translation of CRISPR-based approaches to address real-world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate.

Responsibilities
Performs tissue culture work (primary immune cells and cancer cell lines). Conducts cell culture experimental design, specifically identifying dose response range of construct plasmids or mRNA, antibody, and small molecule inhibitors to test in mammalian cell systems. Performs functional assays and optimizes assay conditions when necessary. These include but are not limited to flow cytometry and FACS, cell viability assays, gene expression quantification, DNA/RNA-seq by nucleic acid extraction and NGS. Generates reagents for molecular biology assays. Implements technical work designed by supervisor including cloning plasmids and in vitro synthesis of mRNA to be used for genome engineering of cancer cells and primary immune cells. Processes Data. Compiles and present data. Reading scientific manuscripts and research on experimental protocols. Troubleshoots experiments under supervision. Organizes laboratory reagents, equipment and samples. Trains of undergraduates and lower-level laboratory assistants.
Required Qualifications
Strong molecular biology skills (including but are not limited to): molecular cloning, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, Sanger-sequencing, electrophoresis, western blotting. Tissue culture work experience with sterile techniques. Familiarity with CRISPR editing approaches. Ability to prioritize work under strict timelines. Creative thinking and problem-solving, exceptional organizational skills, a strong work ethic, careful attention to detail and safety, good laboratory practices and good record keeping
Education/Training:
Bachelor's of Science in the natural or physical sciences and two years of laboratory experience and/or equivalent experience/training. Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Conceptual understanding gene expression regulation. Extensive previous wet laboratory experience. Experience with flow cytometry or FACS. Ability to communicate with team members, and all levels of management with clarity and precision, both verbally and in writing in a timely fashion.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,490.82 (step 1.0) - $71,291.74 (step 11.0).
This is a 5.5-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), limited (temporary) position that is eligible for UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly. The grant for this position ends on August 31st, 2024.
