Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Accountant specializes in coding and entry of financial transactions and data, focusing primarily on third party restricted non-traditional funded accounting, including Charter School and Non-Profit grant reporting. This position performs the duties and responsibilities of the accounting and finance functions that ensures accuracy of the financial system supporting both the YMCA and Charter Schools.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Charter School Function:
- Responsible for financial reporting and compliance for YMCA SKY Academy Charter School with the School Board of Sarasota County (SBSC) and Florida Department of Education (FLDOE).
- Review of and proper reporting of Grants, including but not limited to, ELC, Food, United Way, PFR, HSAC, YReads and Governmental grants (Charter School and YMCA).
- Preparation of monthly journal entries and financial statements at both the school level and the YMCA level as directed by supervisor
- Monthly preparation of the Bank Reconciliation and Due To/From the YMCA.
- Monthly review and reconciliation of Charter School Balance Sheet accounts, including the YMCA accounts pertaining to the Charter Schools.
- Maintains the Charter Schools Chart of Accounts matrix and the cross-reference profile to the YMCA.
- Maintain files supporting both the YMCA and Charter Schools audits.
- Support Food Administrator reporting on National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Childcare Food Program (CCFP) and the Summer Food Sponsor Program (SFSP).
- Reviews Accounts Payable transactions to verify correct coding and budget comparatives.
- Reviews Accounts Receivable transactions by managing the deposits completed by the Charter Schools, verifying proper coding along with timeliness, assuring accuracy. Backup for Charter School deposits when needed.
- Evaluate all Charter School fixed asset purchases, assuring accurate reporting and evaluating whether a charter school FA or YMCA FA.
- Prepares analysis of food and transportation income/expense to support management.
- Develops, prepares, and distributes SGA reports that are deemed useful for Charter School management.
- Produce monthly financial reports with major variance with comments.
- Supports the budget process for the YMCA.
- Budget support for both the individual Charter Schools and the YMCA.
- Responsible for monthly one-on-one meetings with District Principal and Principal, as well as attending school staff meetings.
- Responsible for attending the monthly Charter School Board Meetings to support the Leadership.
General Finance Function:
- Support Finance Department with the annual audits
- Preparation, examination, or analysis of accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance of reporting and procedural standards.
- Involved in identifying system enhancements, noting concerns and recommendations of improvements, and providing options to
- management that will ensure the integrity of data imported to the General Ledger form other platforms (Daxko, SGA, Paylocity, Raisers Edge, RDC machines, etc..).
- Responsible for financial software setup and modifications of user profiles.
- Responsible for creating General Ledger Accounts in financial software upon Supervisor approval.
- Assist with special projects as requested.
- Provide cross training to staff as directed by the Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance preferred.
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) and the Redbook manual from the FLDOE and collaborating with Supervisor regarding internal controls and process and procedures with compliance with Redbook, GAAP and GAGAS.
- Requires intermediate computer literacy of word and spreadsheet software and recordkeeping and bookkeeping principles.
- Meet the Association's policies on background screening.
- Must be meticulous with accurate data entry skills.
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to learn YMCA software.
- Travel is expected throughout service area (estimated 10%).
CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of two years of advanced accounting or bookkeeping work experience.
- CPR and First Aid Certifications required.
- Completion of YMCA of the USA Child Abuse and Neglect class.
- Completion of the YMCA's Blood Borne Pathogens training.
- Staff Safety Requirements/Cleaning Protocols.
- Additional training classes as recommended by Supervisor or required by HR.

- Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 75% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse, 10-key calculator, phone, and similar machines.
- The noise level in the work environment is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.
