To support our global mission and programs, WaterAid America is searching for an Accountant to join our small, collaborative Finance team. The Accountant will contribute to the team by managing a variety of accounting, analytical and financial processes that enable WaterAid to consistently produce and deliver accurate financial reporting for internal and external audiences.
To enable the Finance Team to deliver timely and accurate financial reports, the successful candidate will be exceptionally organized, able to demonstrate initiative, prioritize conflicting deadlines, and ensure the full cycle of accounting processes is completed to high standards. In working effectively with diverse teams and cultures, the successful candidate must also possess a learning mindset, strong communication and interpersonal skills.
The Accountant is responsible for managing intricate transactions and processes, translating financial data, extracting insights and supporting budget-holders to understand, analyze and summarize their department's financial performance. The Accountant also plays a leading role in onboarding and operationalizing the team to new policies, procedures, tools, and systems and is responsible for pro-actively identifying and escalating issues to mitigate disruptions and support the team to continuously strengthen internal processes and controls.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee (remote) bank deposits; review cash receipts against bank records/statements and perform bank and income reconciliations.
  • With People & Ops Team, manage bi-weekly payroll and benefits submissions, manage the annual payroll schedule, upload 403b contributions to vendor site, etc.; prepare annual 1099s for vendors.
  • Manage petty cash for office use, maintain or replenish funds as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of monthly quarterly and annual financial reports, statements and supporting financial schedules, including inter-company and Board-level reporting.
  • Format and distribute monthly cost center reports; assist with follow up questions.
  • Runs Accounts Receivable reports; manages AR aging and follow through with responsible staff on collection issues; input and maintain year end accruals
  • Advise and support the Sr. Accountant to complete cost allocations to restricted funds (indirect and direct expense schedules) and monthly reconciliations (bank and cash accounts, grants and other accounts payable, intercompany transactions, petty cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and depreciations, etc.), as well as monthly, quarterly, and year-end close and forecasting processes.
  • Lead on the preparation of team and departmental components within annual and quarterly processes including budgeting, quarterly reforecasting, audit requests and 990 tax and other required government filings, serve as business partner to assigned budget-holder to support department-level budget processes.
  • Prepare journal entries triggered by adjustments, corrections and reclassifications as instructed by Sr. Accountant or Finance Director.
  • Special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications:
Essential skills and experience:
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or a quantitative field such as business, finance, economics, or statistics required and minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience, or an Associate's degree and 5 years' relevant/ progressive experience.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP and accounting principles.
  • Strong work planning skills and the ability to prioritize, to ensure commitments and deadlines are met and numerous tasks executed simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical skills with an appetite to continually learn and grow; demonstrated high degree of proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Superb attention to detail and project management skills: creative approach to problem-solving, ability to prioritize, manage and execute numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage and execute numerous tasks simultaneously and on deadline.
  • Sound judgement and ability to exercise discretion in working with confidential data.
  • Positive and flexible approach to collaborating across teams and functions; strong communication skills and professional manner.
  • Commitment to WaterAid's values and a working style that reflects these.
  • Ability to work onsite and remotely, as needed.

Desired skills and experience
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector.
  • Familiarity with information systems and/or platforms is a plus (Bill.com, SUN, Bamboo HRIS, PowerBI, JustWorks PEO, and/or other benefits administration, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Spanish or French is helpful, but not required.
