Sr. Specialist EHS ManufacturingOn Site

Job Summary:

The Sr. Specialist, EHS Manufacturing – Nashville, TN, area position is accountable for supporting all elements of the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs within the assigned scope and has dual responsibilities at a second location (Detroit, MI, area). Will act as the lead EHS technical expert and advocate for continuous improvement of EHS performance within the assigned scope to promote a safe, productive, sustainable, and environmentally sound work culture through the application of continuous improvement, best practices, and personal accountability. The jobholder will work closely with Operations leadership to ensure continued adoption of the EHS culture of excellence and effective execution of the EHS strategy within manufacturing and ancillary operations such as laboratories, administrative offices, and sales offices.

The position will provide professional knowledge and technical expertise around regulatory compliance, policy and program development and training within their assigned scope. Specific emphasis will be placed on: 1) developing and driving programs that continuously improve employee safety performance in the regions to world-class standards; and, 2) and developing and implementing regional and local EHS management systems and maintenance of applicable certifications of such systems (e.g., ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 etc.) within the assigned area of responsibility. This position will implement EHS plans and timelines appropriate for their area of responsibility. Depending on the scope, this position may also provide EHS support for Fluidcare sites if necessary and may also engage with the local QA personnel as a part of the ISO certification processes. The position is expected to navigate, interact, effectively communicate, and act as a change agent within their area of responsibility to drive continuous improvement. It is anticipated that this position will require domestic travel (<20%) between the TN and MI facilities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, drives towards a world-class employee safety culture by implementing safety systems, policies and procedures, safety campaigns, and programs by improving employee safe behaviors and eliminating, preventing, or controlling hazards/unsafe conditions. Drives incident prevention strategies and evaluates, educates, and responds to predictive behaviors.
  • Serves as the technical expert and supports implementation of the corporate EHS software systems within the region necessary to support compliance activities and the tracking/reporting of EHS performance metrics and trends within the assigned region.
  • Provides support of appropriate medical and industrial hygiene related policies and programs to support accident and potential exposure incident management. Working closely with local HR and Operations teams, supports pre-employment fitness for duty evaluations as necessary and return-to-work programs for injured employees.
  • Support implementation of the Company’s EHS management systems strategy within the region including identifying appropriate certification strategies (Responsible Care, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001) coordinating with the Global EHS Director, Director Corporate Sustainability and Manager, Regional EHS Manufacturing. Collaborate with Corporate/Regional Quality function in the implementation, auditing and maintenance of certification of such systems.
  • Serve as a resource for EHS training requirements. Serves as a technical expert to implement the Corporate EHS online training system and/or associated training materials for employee initial and refresher EHS training within the assigned scope. Develop supplemental training strategies and resources necessary for the region not met by the corporate system as necessary for compliance or performance improvements. Work with management and operations personnel to ensure training information is kept up-to-date and meets regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the technical expert and provide oversight and/or assist operational personnel in the performance of various types of assessments (i.e., job safety analysis, PPE assessments, HAZ-Ops, Process Safety, compliance assessments, etc.) Monitor resolution of findings as appropriate. Participate in the Company’s raw material and product introduction processes to assess risks at the manufacturing locations. Ensure appropriate assessments are conducted as a part of onboarding toll manufacturing and chemical management services contracts, as necessary.
  • Work closely with the Global EHS Director, Director Global Technical Services, site operations and the external insurance firms to effectively identify and manage loss prevention issues within assigned scope. Also work closely with Corporate Engineering and site operations to ensure EHS is appropriately taken into consideration in the design and execution of capital projects. Work with site leadership as a business partner to ensure that multi-year EHS Capex projects are fully aligned and fulfilled at the site level.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Engineering on any facility construction/demolition/closure projects to ensure appropriate contractor management programs are in place and that activities are performed in compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements to effectively manage hazards. Coordinate with Operations/Engineering personnel to implement an effective MOC process including maintenance of reviews in the EHS management software system.
  • Supervise EHS consultants and contractors hired to perform EHS services such as industrial hygiene testing, fit testing, ventilation systems testing, sample collection, workplace hazard assessments, etc. Assures that consultants follow regulatory and company requirements. Analyzes and interprets data and reports and makes recommendations.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline: Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Toxicology, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environment, Health and Safety, Chemistry, Biology, or appropriate science related field required. Advance certification, additional specialized safety education and/or equivalent work experience desired but not required. These may include: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) NEBOSH Certification, etc.

7+ years’ experience in the environmental, health and safety discipline with a strong focus on safety preferred. At least 5 years working in a manufacturing environment as a safety professional preferred. Experience in the specialty chemical or chemical industry preferred. Experience in a service industry a plus.

Specific knowledge and expertise in:

  • Strong technical and regulatory expertise in relevant environmental, health and safety regulatory requirements within the geographic region covered as well as knowledge of and implementation experience with applicable industry standards including but not limited to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001, Responsible Care, etc.
  • Strong technical and regulatory expertise in relevant regional and national product safety/stewardship regulatory requirements and associated management systems and programs
  • OSHA 10-hour and/or 30-Hour training or equivalent training content
  • GHS compliant safety data sheets and labelling requirements.
  • Hazardous materials/dangerous goods transportation requirements.
  • Emergency response and crisis communications procedures and practices
  • Process risk management best practices
  • Best practices related to unsafe acts and at risk behaviors
  • Incident investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action management

Work Environment

No specific physical demands have been identified for this position. Typical office ergonomic conditions exist. Will be visiting and working in manufacturing, chemical management services and customer sites to assess occupational/operational hazards. Potential for exposure to physical and chemical hazards exist. Domestic travel required (<20%). Additional travel occasionally needed based on new project implementations.
