The primary purpose of the Safety Technician position is to provide technical and compliance support to programs, sections, the Environmental Health and Safety department, and the institution regarding chemical safety and hazardous waste management issues, air and water quality compliance, emergency response, and other programmatic needs, in full compliance with departmental, institutional, state and federal guidelines and regulations.
Job Specific Competencies
Recognize, Evaluate and Mitigate Hazards Conducts emergency preparedness and response activities to internal incidents such as hazardous chemical, biohazard or radioactive spills during normal and off-shift hours. Performs inspections on assigned fire safety equipment and maintains an accurate inventory of equipment. Assists with fire and emergency drills.
Compliance Carries out and conducts waste management, environmental protection, lab safety, occupational health and safety, fire and life safety operations and regulatory compliance activities associated with institutional waste and recycling programs. Maintains waste management or pollution prevention programs, including but not limited to medical waste , silver recovery, supply management , vehicle maintenance, universal waste, and recycling. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and assigned safety equipment.
Program Support and Implementation Attends safety meetings as assigned; performs duties associated with meetings as assigned. Sorts and delivers radiation safety budgets to departments at the Smithville and Bastrop campuses. Performs various research laboratory safety inspections safety inspections, files and submits inspection reports as required. Performs various industrial hygiene services such as accident investigations, ergonomic, assessments, and fit testing. Provides safety training as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Travel Required to Bastrop/Smithville Conducts travel as needed to maintain compliance with all Local, State and Federal Regulations and Guidelines Travel to Bastrop/Smithville location to support Emergency Support efforts in cases of releases and all other emergency situations deemed necessary. The use of Institutional Pool vehicles will be the primary means of travel, with all other means secondary and under a condition of approval by Management.
High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in environmental, health and/or safety programs. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
