Job DescriptionHybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan minimum three times per week.The RoleAs a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans. Conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas in developing next-gen battery technology.

Write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research. Join us today!As part of the role, you will be responsible for planning and executing scientific research focused on studying the effects of manufacturing processes on properties and performance of battery materials, including lithium metal for battery anodes and cathode active materials.

Be prepared to also lead, plan, and execute research investigations related to battery materials processing and manufacturing. You will also conduct electrochemical testing and in-depth microstructural analyses across multiple length scales, including scanning electron microscopy combined with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to characterize features such as porosity, cracks, crystal structure, and other factors that control material properties.What You'll Do* Develop a fundamental understanding of the correlation between microstructure and mechanical and/or electrochemical behavior* Use your fundamental understanding of materials science and materials processing to develop innovative next-generation high volume manufacturing process concepts for electric vehicle (EV) batteries* Capture findings in internal reports and external publications to disseminate knowledge and drive collaboration with external partners* Represent GM by being a leader in lightweight and battery materials while maintaining knowledge and awareness of new developments* Generate innovative ideas, new project concepts, and demonstrate innovative thinking to solve technical problems* Generate and capture novel intellectual property in patentsAdditional Job DescriptionYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)* Masters in Engineering/Applied science (Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Physical Metallurgy), PhD in engineering/physics or related disciplines with experimentally based thesis preferred* 5+ years of experience and/or PostDoc research in battery cell materials/manufacturing or metal processing and development of metallic materials* Demonstrated background in processing-structure-property relationships* Demonstrated ability to work safely in the lab* Analyze and interpret experimental data* Adaptability to working with multiple projects and in different technical areas* Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams* Excellent oral and written communication skills* Excellent decision-making skills and problem-solving capability* Interpersonal traits for effective collaboration with othersWhat Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)* Experience or exposure to battery cell manufacturing processes (electrode processing, cell assembly, cell testing)* Demonstrated experience with various microscopy and materials characterization techniques at different length scales* Experience with battery re-use, re-manufacturing, recyclingAbout GMOur vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.Why Join UsWe aspire to be the most inclusive company in the world.
