Overview

The Senior Materials Engineer will provide forensic consulting services requiring materials science and engineering expertise for insurance, legal, industrial and other clients. The work includes performing root cause failure analysis and forensic evaluations of failed industrial and consumer products, analyses of failed components in machinery, and evaluations of industrial materials failures of all types. Part of the job will also include providing oral and written reports of findings and, when needed, expert testimony. You may also be responsible for project management and technical oversight of multiple projects; evaluating and reviewing design and field engineering changes; ensuring work quality and adherence to specifications; and performing other related duties as assigned. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Performing forensic assignments within the field of materials science and engineering expertise based upon a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client in advance of performing the work. 
  • Performing field investigations: Studying and determining the cause and origin of materials-related defects and/or damage.
  • Conducting laboratory investigations: Leading and participating in joint laboratory examinations, including SEM-EDS, FTIR, DSC, OES, fractography, metallography, and mechanical testing.
  • Using national and international codes and standards related to design, fabrication, and testing of various products.
  • Producing written forensic reports of findings detailing the cause and origin of materials-related defects and/or damage. 
  • Managing multiple projects, working in conjunction with other team members to produce client reports in a timely manner.
  • Using many different equations, applications, and figures to ensure proper cause-and-origin analyses. Items that you must use and that you must take part in include laboratory testing, materials characterization, and root cause and failure analysis techniques, to name just a few pertinent items.
  • Assisting with junior-level engineer mentoring/integration program. 
  • Possibly serving as team leader or project manager which may require supervision and/or oversight of the technical work of junior–level engineers. 
  • Initiating, developing and maintaining mutually beneficial client relationships.

Required Education and Certifications 

  • B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering degree or higher. M.S. or Ph.D. desired.
  • Professional Engineering license.
  • 8-15+ years of experience.
  • Project management and field investigation experience.
  • High level of analytical skills. This work requires continual attention to detail with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • The ability to interact and communicate with clients at all levels (e.g. internal and external). 
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Applications and computer assisted engineering and design software.

Required Skills and Abilities 

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical reports or journals, financial reports and legal documents. 
  • Ability to clearly and coherently write scopes-of-work, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, and other technical documents.  
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients with the capability of effectively presenting information to top management, clients, public groups and/or boards of directors. 

Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements 

Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside field locations (i.e. Client’s office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). You will be required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and through tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. You will also be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Clear vision and depth perception are necessary.

Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch.  There will be periods where overtime will be required, which the employee will need to comply with in order to meet the demands of the position.

Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% travel.  Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
