Heart Share Human Services of New York has four preschools located in Brooklyn and Queens focused on maximizing the potential of every student no matter the learning disability. Through the use of Applied Behavior Analysis and TEACH along with the New York State Common Core curriculum each student is provided with an education experience geared towards their needs. The Heart Share Preschool also provides different therapies and physical education courses geared to what the students want and need. The Heart Share Preschool is also a family and community that strive to help each other out with a common goal of helping the children succeed. These are necessary steps to create the impact we are looking for which is provided them the keys to succeed on their own in the future. The HeartShare Preschool operates as a 12-month program.

The Speech Therapist is an important part of the Behavior Support Team at The HeartShare School. The Speech Therapist reports to the Educational Director and will provide music therapy services to the children in conjunction with support from the Special Education Teacher. Some of the duties the Speech Therapist has includes:

Responsibilities:

  1. Assess current level of communicative functioning, and preparation of written reports as outlined in the policy and procedures.

  2. Participate in Annual Review Process and Transdisciplinary determination of IEP goals base on the criteria of present and future environment.

  3. Design and implement goals for individual and classroom therapy.

  4. Provide therapeutic intervention using a push in and a pullout method.

  5. Provide therapy as mandated on the IEP.

  6. Implement a variety of activities and methods in a child friendly manner to facilitate speech and language goals during therapy session.

  7. Design and integrate appropriate nonverbal communication devices (ex. PEC’s, communication board, signing, etc.) throughout the child’s daily program, if appropriate. 

  8. Prepare and implement classroom based activities weekly in conjunction with the classroom teacher.

  9. Arrange overall therapy schedule.

  10. Consult with teachers and teacher assistants regarding elicitation and generalization of speech and language goals in the classroom to maintain consistent programming.

  11. Consult with other clinicians (ex. OT, PT, Psych., SW) to discuss and implement appropriate therapeutic intervention within session.

  12. Research and implement direct therapeutic programs (ex. apraxic approach, oral motor therapy, etc.) and make the appropriate referrals (ex. neurologist) if applicable.

  13. Participate in IEP updates and annual review meetings with families.

  14. Meet with individual families, as needed.

  15. Maintain contact and provide direct instruction to families regarding their child’s speech and language goals.

  16. Participate in Transdisciplinary team meetings and follow through with any actions that are recommended in the area of speech and language.

  17. Monitor speech and language goals as well as completing quarterly progress notes reflective of the IEP.

  18. Maintain daily attendance, individual session log in EZ Trak and data collection for pertinent IEP goals as described in the policy and procedure Manual.

  19. Plan in-service training in conjunction with the Supervisor, provide in-service training to staff, and participate in staff development activities.

  20. Plan and conduct parent education groups.

  21. Monitor audio logical status of the children. Provide appropriate follow-up including referrals to otolaryngologists, ENT or audiologists.

  22. Remain sensitive and responsive to cultural differences present in the agency’s service population.

  23. Evaluate feeding skills and determine appropriate therapeutic intervention and follow-up including referrals to specialists (ex. video swallow, nutritionist)

  24. Attend CPSE/CSE when appropriate.

  25. Participate in peer supervision.

  26. Submit weekly therapy schedules and notify Supervisor of any changes in overall schedule.

  27. If fully certified: Maintain active licenses (ex. CCC, New York State Licensure, Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped-TSHH or Teacher of Speech Language Disorder-TSLD) therefore paying dues and acquiring CEU’s as stated in the individual licenses procedures.

  28. If CFY candidate: Meet with your CFY supervisor weekly, arrange for supervised observation sessions, maintain appropriate paperwork and submit all reports to be reviewed and co-signed by supervisor.
