A Brief Overview
Responsible for receiving specimens, confirming physician orders, obtaining the necessary information for testing specimens, preparing the specimens for testing and preparing specimens to be forwarded to other laboratories including reference laboratories. Act as a support person for internal and external customers with regards to solving problems, answering questions and giving technical support. Assist in maintaining a positive relationship with outreach customers. Assist in and/or instruction of other personnel and medical laboratory scientist interns. May perform waived testing.
Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required

Experience Qualifications
  • 1 year Phlebotomy or laboratory experience. Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Follows all OSHA guidelines and hospital and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Shows competence in performing Specimen Processing procedures. Demonstrates competence in resolving the lost specimen algorithm. Demonstrates ability to follow procedural directions exactly.

  • Demonstrates ability to access orders in the hospital and clinic electronic health record and outreach orders system and select the appropriate orders for the correct date of service.

What you will do
  • Receives specimens, confirm physicians orders, obtaining the necessary information for testing the specimen and preparing the specimens for analysis.
  • Acts as a support person for internal and external customers with regards to problem solving; answers questions regarding test orders and specimen requirements.
  • Refers technical problems to a Medical Laboratory Scientist as needed. o Maintains a positive relationship with outreach clients. o Effectively interacts with phlebotomy and technical staff in the laboratory regarding specimen requirements and related communication.
  • Applies the laboratory policy for pediatric test collection to calculate the daily maximum collection volume.
  • Completes esoteric testing requisitions with the correct order information and prepares for shipment of biologic specimens according to IATA regulations.
  • Performs waived testing. Maintains quality waived testing results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Evaluates for proper type and adequate volume of specimen.
  • Accurately matches the order and the specimen, checking for proper labeling. Labels specimen with appropriate test accessioning label to prepare for testing.
  • Is alert to possible sources of error and follows the Specimen Labeling Deficiency policy.
  • Receive, match, and confirm requisition and specimen brought to the department from referring hospitals, physician offices and other health care facilities.
  • Enters orders for laboratory tests from manual requisitions into the electronic health record and the laboratory information system using current protocols and entering all relevant information for appropriate testing of the specimen and reporting of results to the clinician.
  • Correctly matches patient labels and specimens and understands the importance of proper specimen identification. Correctly determines duplicate requests, incorrectly ordered tests, and properly cancelled tests and accurately cancel, credit, or re-input the proper tests.
  • Calls or faxes results along with normal ranges to internal and internal customers as requested.
  • Scans a copy of the esoteric reference laboratory test report into the correct electronic health record. Prepares copies of paper laboratory reports to all appropriate clinicians and accounts for distribution.
  • Maintains centrifuge equipment as directed by instruction manual, laboratory policy/procedure manual and/or manager.
  • Refers esoteric test report to Medical Laboratory Scientist for critical value reporting.
