SUNNYVALE SCHOOL DISTRICT
TITLE: Teacher - Special Day Class - Severely Handicapped
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Possess a valid credential for teaching Severely Handicapped in California.
  2. Master's Degree in Special Education is desirable.
  3. Basic knowledge of sign language is desirable.
  4. Experience in teaching severely handicapped students on an integrated site is desirable.
  5. Classroom teaching experience in both regular and special education is desirable.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Site Principal
JOB GOAL: To provide each severely handicapped student with a program that will enable him to reach his fullest academic, physical, emotional and behavioral potential as outlined by his Individual Educational Plan.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provides a basic core program for severely handicapped students which includes, but is not limited to, communication, self-help, survival skills, socialization, fine and gross motor, community living skills, community awareness, pre-academics and academics, independence and responsibility.
  2. Instructs children with developmental delays using appropriate techniques, equipment, instructional materials and supplies in accordance with the Individualized Education Program for each student.
  3. Develops with each student realistic long and short range goals in areas of delay, allowing for amelioration of handicapping conditions and providing for continued development in areas of pupil strengths.
  4. Works closely with other special education staff members, e.g. psychologists, program specialist, speech therapist, adaptive physical education teacher, in the assessment process, program planning and to insure implementation of the I.E.P.
  5. Directs instructional aide and classroom volunteers.
  6. Communicates with parents as necessary as a means of effectively coordinating the efforts of the school and the home in the improvement of the overall program for the student.
  7. Collaborates with regular classroom teachers to provide successful integration of the students into the regular program.
  8. Evaluates student performance, keeps up-to-date records of individual student's progress and recommends revision of the I.E.P., as appropriate; modifies I.E.P. accordingly.
  9. Creates and maintains an effective learning environment in which a positive self-image and self-help activities are stressed.
  10. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  11. Provides a functional and attractive classroom environment.
  12. Integrates instructional strategies with appropriate technology.
  13. Facilitates on going communication with agencies and professionals serving severely handicapped.
  14. Participate in staff development awareness opportunity as related to the regular curriculum.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and terms of employment are described in the Agreement between the Sunnyvale School District and the Sunnyvale Education Association.
• EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Agreement between the Sunnyvale School District and the Sunnyvale Education Association.
