Job description

Under the general direction of the Senior Assistant Attorney General or a Supervising Deputy Attorney General, the Special Investigator conducts and assists in criminal investigations and prosecutions of offenses within the mission of the Special Prosecutions Section, including complex, multijurisdictional cases involving various forms of fraud, unlawful employment and harm to workers, and accusations concerning public integrity; evaluates complaints and case referrals; interviews victims and witnesses; gathers, organizes, reviews, and analyzes evidence; prepares accurate and clear reports and summaries; drafts and assists in the execution of search warrants; works within vertical prosecution teams and in coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; testifies and assists in court proceedings. Statewide travel required.

Working Conditions
Enclosed windowed office, interior office, or cubicle in a smoke-free environment, field work to interview witnesses and obtain evidence as needed.
May be required to sit at and use a computer terminal while performing research and other duties, up to 6 to 9 hours per day. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. may also be required. May be required to travel and participate in investigative and information-gathering activities outside of home office region, including remote locations, as necessary.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Possess basic computer and technological skills, such as word processing, Internet, email, recording devices, cameras; experience in working with clients in a professional, competent manner; possess tact, emotional stability, maturity. Experience in using digital and video recorders for gathering of evidence. Possession of a valid California driver's license is required when using a state-owned or leased vehicle in performance of the essential functions of this position.
Applicants should have knowledge of various fraudulent schemes and applicable state laws and offenses related to the mission of the Special Prosecutions Section (such as theft, forgery, securities fraud, real estate and mortgage fraud, money laundering, labor theft, various forms of tax evasion, and misappropriation); ability to evaluate and investigate complex matters, including organize and analyze large volumes of evidence, produce detailed and comprehensive reports, and develop summaries and exhibits for court presentation; good verbal skills and ability to testify in court; professionalism in dealing with law enforcement agencies, government officials, and the public; responsible work habits, including ability to work independently and with a team, with initiative, and under pressure.
