JOB SUMMARY
Serve as interpreter for the IHB clients and patients with limited English proficiency whose primary language is Spanish.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide medical interpretation for Spanish-speaking patients in IHB Medical and Dental clinics when needed.
  • Cover Central Registration desk during hours of operation as scheduled.
  • Schedule appointments using EPIC via phone/face to face.
  • Verify insurance, schedule appointments, and assist with patient registration.
  • Collect upfront payments, co-pays, payments for pros work (dentures, partials, etc.) from patients following current process and procedures.
  • Print Daily Balance report as needed.
  • Retrieve messages from Spanish telephone line daily and respond to message, confirm or cancel/reschedule appointments.
  • Assist with interpreting forms to Spanish as requested.
  • Provide cultural information to staff and patients.
  • Other duties deemed necessary by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Must be fluent in Spanish and English languages.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints of multiple busy clinical departments.
  • Excellent people-skills, reliability, flexibility, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with standards of patient confidentiality and ability to adhere to these standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to Indian Health Board policies including Attendance Policy.
  • Ability to understand and meet the needs of the patient through respectful, courteous and caring interactions with patients, families and other health professionals.
  • Knows, understands, and adheres to organizational policy related to the patient's rights for confidential care.
  • Knowledge and respect of the American Indian culture.
  • Actively participates and works positively, flexibly, and cooperatively in a team effort to accomplish the goals of the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate degree in a health-related field is desired.
  • A minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training required.
  • Two years Spanish interpretation experience in a medical setting is preferred.
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
  • Computer experience preferred.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records scheduling (EPIC a plus)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is active, involving walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items such as papers, books, charts. No special physical demands are involved.

IHB makes reasonable efforts to limit access to and use of protected health information (PHI) by employees to the minimum necessary performance of assigned duties as outlines in job descriptions. This position is access restricted to PHI needed to carry out health care operations.
