Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust.  The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works).  The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program; and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors. 

 

The Opportunity

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a Spanish-Language Editor in the Interpretive Content Department to support the Museum's bilingual initiative of presenting all exhibition and collection didactive materials bilingually. Reporting to the Senior Editor, this position will serve as the chief editorial authority for Museum interpretive content and promotional materials in Spanish.

Major Job Responsibilities
  • Oversee, facilitate, and/or perform the translation of a variety of exhibition/installation materials, both printed and digital (including gallery texts, promotional materials, digital media, web content) at both the Center and the Villa
  • Collaborate with project teams-from initial planning meetings through final proof-to ensure high-quality translations (correct, consistent, engaging, accessible)
  • Perform all editorial functions as needed, including mechanical editing, substantive editing, and proofreading
  • Shape standards and procedures for translation; advise on editorial best practices in museum contexts; further develop the Spanish-language editorial style guide; help develop bilingual style guide for Museum's collection
  • Guide external translators and review translated texts at various stages in the process for accuracy, consistency, clarity, and style; recommend corrections or revisions; create and maintain project-specific style sheets as needed
  • Provide translations for English-language updates during proofing, and/or compile proof changes for external translator and review translator's updates
  • Enter all Spanish-language changes in Workfront as well as InDesign; collaborate with designers to determine directions on rags, ligatures, breaks, and other formatting issues or textual concerns
  • Further develop Museum capacity for Spanish-language translation; define roles and responsibilities for, hire, and supervise additional position/s; may advise on building capacity in other related areas of Museum
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in the humanities (preferably in English or Art History); MA preferred
  • At least 5 years of relevant publishing experience, preferably including 3 years in either a museum or university press environment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field: Spanish, English, Linguistics, etc., preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant translation, editorial, and museum experience preferred
  • Degree or coursework in Art or Art History a plus
  • Exceptional Spanish-language translation, copyediting, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent command of both English and Spanish in order to accurately translate complex texts
  • Experience translating and editing art historical material for museum audiences
  • Outstanding skills in project management, including meeting tight deadlines and prioritizing workload
  • Ability to work effectively and tactfully with colleagues in other departments within the institution
  • Knowledge of standard proofreaders' marks
  • Strong word processing skills; experience with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe InDesign
