Job Description
Position Summary
- The Social Services Director plans, organizes, develops, and directs the overall operation of the Social Services department to ensure all medically-related emotional and social needs of patients are met in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and MUSC Health standards.
- Reports to Administrator
Working Conditions
- Attends and participate in continuing education programs
- Works in department as well as throughout facility
- Subject to frequent interruptions
- Involved with patients, associates, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances
- Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, etc.
- Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily as necessary
- Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the workday
- Possible exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses
Education, Experience, and Licensure/Certifications
- Social Work related degree preferred, but not required.
- Must have a bachelor's degree in a human services field (which may include gerontology) if working in a facility with 120 or more beds (see State law)
- Two (2) years' experience in health-care social work preferred

- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
- Must be knowledgeable of social services practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing social services functions in the post-acute care facility
- Must have the ability to implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the social services department
- Must perform proficiently in all applicable competency areas
- Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information
- Must understand and follow company policies including harassment and compliance procedures
- Displays integrity and professionalism by adhering to MUSC Health's polices and completes mandatory trainings and other appropriate compliance training
- Promotes a culture of integrity, maintains an "open door" policy, and does not participate in or allow retaliation against those who report good faith concerns
- Actively implements the compliance program and completion of mandatory coursework and ensures l 00% participation by department staff
Essential Functions
- Must be able to implement a social services program that meets the medically-related social and emotional needs of patients as well as State, Federal, corporate, and division guidelines
- Must be able to act as patient advocate and provide education to staff regarding patient rights
- Must be able to chart appropriately and timely
- Must be able to assist patient and family through education, financial planning assistance, liaison with community agencies, etc.
- Must be able to recruit, select, hire, train, evaluate, counsel, and supervise social services staff
