Social Media & Communications Intern

Summary

Out Youth serves Central Texas LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults with programs and services to provide a safe space for community members to come together, receive support, and make friends who understand who they are.

As a growing team, Out Youth is filling a new role: part-time Social Media and Communications Intern who is passionate about helping LGBTQIA+ people, loves non-profit work, and enjoys Social Media management, content creation, and engaging with the community.

The Social Media & Communications Intern role at Out Youth is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about advocating for LGBTQIA+ communities and looking to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications and Social Media management. This position primarily involves supporting the Marketing and Communications team in crafting compelling digital content, managing various Social Media platforms, and engaging with our audience effectively.

The ideal candidate for this internship is a motivated and creative individual with a keen interest in Social Media trends and storytelling. They should possess strong communication skills, a knack for producing engaging content, and a willingness to learn and contribute to a diverse and inclusive work environment. This role offers a chance to actively contribute to our mission of providing a safe and supportive space for LGBTQIA+ youth while gaining practical experience in the field of marketing and communications within a nonprofit setting.

Position Type: Part-Time Internship

Reports to Marketing and Communications Coordinator / Director of Development

Travel Minimal

Location: Hybrid. This position is predominantly in our administrative office in North Central Austin, with flexibility to work remotely

Compensation: $2,000, paid in 4 installments

Time Commitment: 8-12 hours per week for 10-12 weeks (February - May 2024)

Essential Functions

Social Media Management

• Assist Marketing & Communications Coordinator in managing and curating Social Media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X) to engage with the community and amplify Out Youth's mission
• Create and schedule Social Media content aligned with branding and communications strategy
• Monitor Social Media analytics and report insights for future improvements

Content Creation

• Generate compelling written and visual content for various platforms, aligning with Out Youth's voice and mission
• Collaborate with team members to produce articles, testimonials, and engaging multimedia content
• Support in the production of graphic media using tools like Adobe Suite, Figma, Canva, etc.

Communications Support

• Assist in responding to general inquiries via Social Media platforms and email
• Aid in maintaining the organization's website with content updates and improvements

Skills & Competencies

• Strong written communication skills with the ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences
• Familiarity with Social Media platforms and content creation tools (Canva, Adobe Suite, Figma, etc.)
• Pursuing or recently completed education in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related fields
• Passion for LGBTQIA+ advocacy and understanding of related issues

Requirements

• Understanding of or willingness to learn about LGBTQIA+ issues and advocacy
• Experience with Social Media management or content creation is a plus, especially experience with short-form video
• High school diploma or equivalent

Physical Demands

• Work is performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking.
• Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
