Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Social Impact and Sustainability (SIS) Project Manager is responsible for leading SIS initiatives, priorities, and stakeholder management both internally and externally of Milliman, Inc.  The position requires a high level of organization, experience with corporate Social Impact and sustainability principles – including working within supply chain, and a track record of ‘getting things done.’

In addition to being responsible for the day-to-day management of SIS initiatives, the PM will also be responsible for acting as the liaison to other Global Corporate Services business areas including procurement, finance, and compliance.  Success in this role is partially determined by the ability to develop and maintain key relationships across the firm as well as executing the work described below.  The Project Manager will work closely/directly with vendors, clients, and with Milliman’s upper-level management on reporting tasks/needs that come with proposals, assessments, and questionnaires involving heavy research, negotiating and information-gathering skills, and requires excellent writing and critical thinking skills.

The SIS role reports directly to the Director of Social Impact and Sustainability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Key management of the strategic planning and ongoing operationalization and growth of SIS, with a particular focus on the Net Zero 2040 Initiative as well as volunteer activities (60% of time), supplier diversity (20% of time), and modern slavery compliance (20% of time).
  • Continually growing understanding of industry trends, regulations, and policy development, and the ability to easily flex/adjust as things change rapidly within the SIS space.
  • Help develop and implement an updated Supplier Code of Conduct that provides a framework to establish a commitment to environmentally and socially responsible practices.
  • Lead vendor and client conversations around topics including supplier diversity, modern slavery, and sustainable procurement. Develop and maintain a diverse supplier list and actively look for opportunities to partner with diverse suppliers when it makes business sense to do so.
  • Design a process to evaluate vendors on their risk for modern slavery. Devise a threshold for which vendors will be required to comply and compliance measures.
  • Oversee the activities and reporting of internal Milliman philanthropic activities including donations (Milliman Giving Fund and scholarships), volunteer activities, and campaigns.
  • Work with GCS HR and other GCS departments to identify any existing activities that assist in detecting and preventing modern slavery potentially including background checks on individuals and vendor risk management activities.
  • Actively engage in both internal and external high-quality communications campaigns, events, report generation/creation, and presentations as needed. May be asked to present or speak publicly during internal events and meetings.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • The ideal candidate must have minimum 10 years’ experience in a similar capacity.
  • The ideal candidate must have previous work experience in SIS in a corporate setting for a global company, or with a sustainability or management consultancy supporting global clients.
  • The ideal candidate must have previous experience with clean energy, climate change, and corporate sustainability.
  • Must have the deep knowledge of SIS frameworks, regulations, and best practices.
  • Must have strong critical thinking and process improvement skills.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.
