Job Description
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking an energetic and engaging individual to fill the role of Skilled Trades (carpentry, plumbing, masonry) and/or electrical) part time adjunct faculty instructor with a special emphasis on non-academic training such as how-to workshops, and maker space opportunities. This position will serve Southwest Virginia Community College's Workforce and Continuing Education Division. Instructional workload will be based on current demand. Instruction will primarily be conducted on campus and potentially throughout the service region of Southwest Virginia Community College and travel may be required. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, able to multi-task, and create a student-oriented learning environment. Classes may be offered during day, evening, or weekend hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Creates course curriculum, assignments, and learning objectives. Must possess ability to prepare/adjust curriculum and training content to relate to various audiences.
• Ability to and previous experience in developing, creating, and designing workshops that are focused on upskilling non-traditional students in specific areas of construction, home improvement, maker's stations, etc.
• Proven ability and previous track record of serving as a brand ambassador to support the recruitment of potential students.
• Ability to plan, organize, and work independently.
• Expected to be reliable, responsible, professional, and efficient.
• Promotes and supports student success.
• Administer exams and evaluate student progress.
• Other duties may be assigned as required.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Must have strong communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills. The successful candidate must have a minimum of five years of documented construction or contractor's experience and be proficient in carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and safety. Potential candidates must also be willing to complete training to teach according to NCCER standards and abide by those set guidelines. The ideal candidate will also have prior experience with blueprint reading, building codes, construction management, and building inspection. The successful candidate must also possess any applicable recognized industry certifications including Journeyman, Master Tradesman, OSHA 10, and Contractor A licensure. Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
Prior teaching experience is preferred. Experience utilizing technology in the classroom and conducting instruction in an online environment. Knowledge of construction estimating, contracts, bidding processes, insurance, and taxes is also preferred. Associate's degree in any related field.
