This position will be filled at either the R&D Scientist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Shock Physics Team in the Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M-9) is seeking outstanding candidates from a diverse pool of applicants for an immediately available R&D Scientist 3/4 position. In addition to running and developing a vigorous shock physics research portfolio, the successful candidate is sought to serve as Team Leader for a team consisting of roughly ten technicians, technologists, engineers, and scientists.
The majority of the Team's research focuses on providing data for the generation of accurate and high-precision equations of state of metals, ceramics, and granular materials, including radiological materials. The Team has pioneered experiments to probe phenomena such as ejecta formation and spall in shocked materials as well as temperature measurements using pyrometric radiance-based techniques. The Team operates eight gas and powder guns, with another under construction, at a variety of sites including: several at TA-40's new Dynamic Equation of State (DEOS) facility; one at the proton radiography (pRad) facility at LANSCE; one at Ancho Canyon; and works closely with MST-16 to operate a gun in a glovebox at TA-55. Additionally, members of the Team frequently lead experiments at large DOE User Facilities such as the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) at the Advanced Photon Source and the Z Machine at Sandia National Lab.
In his/her role as Team Leader, the successful candidate will provide an interface between the Team and the M-9 Group Office and project sponsors. More specifically, the Team Leader will advocate for all members of the team, ensure that deliverables are met on time, and work with Team PIs to forecast and track the Team's budget. Team Leaders in M-9 are a vital component of the Group's overall management structure, working with other Team Leaders and the Group Office to develop high level strategies for the Group.
