This is a great opportunity for an experienced Shipyard Structural Fitter to join our growing team! Excellent benefits, 401K, vacation, sick and holiday paid time off. Must have three (3) to five (5) years' experience as a Shipyard Structural Fitter.
Starting Hourly Pay Range for This Position: $24.00 to $28.00. This is based on previous work experience, skills, and current certifications / professional licenses. Full-Time Minimum 40 hours a week Monday-Friday.
Job Responsibilities for the Shipyard Structural Fitter:
- Determines the position of structural components working from blueprints or templates.
- Provides direction to subordinate ship fitters and tack welders.
- Uses blueprints to lay out position of parts on metal.
- Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
- Positions parts in hull of vessel and align parts in relation to each other.
- Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.
- Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members.
- Tack welds clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
- Bends, flanges, cuts, and shapes plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts.
- Must be able to work in confined/enclosed spaces.
- Must be able to work/climb in elevations greater than 5'.
- Must be able to wear/work a respirator when applicable.
- Must follow all Company policies and procedures, including those relative to employee safety, environmental policy, and the principles of our quality system.
- Other duties assigned or requested by Management.
- Works overtime as required.
- Reports to work daily and on time.
- Must be able to pass ABS/Coast Guard tack test
Qualifications for the Shipyard Structural Fitter:
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) to five (5) years' experience as a Shipyard Structural Fitter.
- Comprehends blueprints, sketches, and templates.
- Must have knowledge of ship building fitting practices.
- Able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
- Accurate in performing the following processes layout, cutting, measuring, and fitting.
- Must demonstrate layout proficiency.
- Proficient in use of precision measurement tools.
- Other job duties may be assigned relevant to the trade.
- Must maintain constant safety awareness.
- Adheres to company safety rules and policies.
- Must be able to apply basic machine shop math.
- Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and observe vessel working protocol.
- Must be able to align rotating equipment using dial indicators or laser alignment tool.
- Must be able to read micrometers and calipers.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 50 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride vessels in open water.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
Environmental Factors:
- Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, chemicals, and gases, various temperatures, and ventilation, all of which can cause discomfort or respiratory difficulties. May work in awkward positions or postures. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
