Service Technician

California Waters is looking for a dedicated Service Technician to provide on-site coordination for all phases of Commercial Pool/ Water Feature construction projects. This person is responsible for scheduling, compliance, quality, cost control, personnel management and job site safety.

GENERAL DESCIPTION

California Waters is one of Orange County's fastest growing Engineering and Construction firms specializing in commercial aquatic design and construction. Applicants for this position shall possess a minimum of 10+ years of experience within the construction industry with at least 5+ years of experience in a Supervisory role. The candidate must display experience and knowledge in the following trades: Earthwork and grading, concrete, shotcrete, structural reinforcement, waterproofing, mechanical or industrial plumbing systems, electrical, and architectural finish installation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES WILL LIKELY INCLUDE

Within the first 30 days and ongoing:

  • Learns California Water's internal departments, mission, purpose, current markets, business processes, design, build and maintenance processes.
  • Completes Osha 10 and CPR/First Aid Training (if such training has not been completed in the past two years).
  • Partners with the Director of Operations and our Senior Project Superintendent to become familiar with our construction processes, work we self-perform versus work we subcontract.
  • Meets and develop rapport with: Project Management, Construction Personnel, Accounting, Purchasing, Warehouse, Engineering, Estimating and Service departments.
  • Visits each jobsite assigned to him to inspect the work performed to date, become familiar with the projects, and introduce himself to the General Contractor/Developer.
  • Asks insightful questions to gain knowledge and understanding about how to manage the construction crews and how to drive timelines forward.
  • Learns to effectively use programs including MS Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, Fieldwire, and Foundation software.
  • Learns how to start new jobs including: helps create a project schedule, works with the Warehouse to coordinate heavy equipment/job box deliveries, coordinate manpower with the Director of Operations and other Project Superintendents.
  • Learns our internal cost coding process.

    By 90 days and ongoing:

  • Leads weekly meetings with the construction crews to discuss safety, project schedules, the coordination of materials, delays, problems with builders, what labor is needed and when and to direct all field personnel and coach them how on how deal with challenges.
  • Meets once a month with Leadership to review/discuss last month's project financials vs. cost estimates, KPI's, internal processes, subcontractor/vendor issues/constraints, heavy equipment needs, vehicles, tools, etc. Review forecasting of workload over the next 3-6 months to ensure we have the employees/Subcontractors available to complete the work.
  • Begins to understand field personnel strengths and weaknesses and starts to develop a plan to recruit certain trades and/or subcontract out different work based on current staff's strength/weaknesses.
  • Begins to “Manage up” and looks at the big picture to identify problems and to identify issues ahead of time and brings them to the attention of Project Management and the Director of Operations. Brings solutions to correct issues and implement, e.g.: introducing new subcontractors and recruiting new field personnel.
  • Ensures changes in work and RFI's are communicated in the field.
  • Shows a strong knowledge of construction methods and techniques, review our current methods, and alters them based on his experience to either reduce labor costs and/or increase quality.
  • Thoroughly understands the complexities of every job: Shows in-depth knowledge of layout, earthwork, shotcrete, steel reinforcement, concrete placement, plastering, plumbing, electrical, pool equipment room, and engineering/code requirements for the above trades.
  • Responsible for overseeing 2-5 average size jobs (~$500k up to 4M each).
  • Has built solid relationships with PM team, Director of Operations, Project Superintendents, Field teams, Accounting, Purchasing, Warehouse, Engineering, Estimating and Service departments. Follows up on promises and is seen as a trusted Manager, bringing new ideas for process improvements weekly.

    6 months and ongoing:

  • Brings new ideas to improve trainings and address weaknesses within the organization. He is humble and displays a can-do attitude to improve skills and knowledge in his team.
  • Fully understands the California Waters construction process, its strengths and weaknesses and has developed a plan to remedy the weaknesses including recruitment and/or subcontracting out certain types of work.
  • Is independent in role, showing an in-depth understanding of how to build water features and pools, and successfully navigates proposed client meetings, imparting technical knowledge in a professional manner.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION

  • 10+ years of experience in the Construction Industry required
  • 5+ years Commercial Pool/Water Feature background required as a Project Superintendent
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Business a plus or a combination of experience and education
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer skills working with various programs including MS Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, Fieldwire, Foundation, throughout each construction project
  • Ability to communicate using electronic mail effectively.
  • Proven ability to read and understand project plans and specifications required
  • Fluent in Spanish required
  • Proven ability to show a sense of urgency and rapidly respond to customer inquiries required
  • Knowledge of general contracting and sub-contracting process, terms, methods, and scheduling required
  • Experience in managing a team, creating strategy, and holding team members accountable for deliverables required
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time
  • Must be able to deliver under pressure and meet project deadlines
  • Familiarity with local, state and federal building codes and regulations
  • Extreme attention to details
  • The applicant must display strong math and analytical skills. The applicant must be highly proficient at reading and understanding blueprints, specifications and statements of work related to each project
  • Valid and current CA driver's license required
  • OSHA 10-hour training certification a plus
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification a plus
  • Ability to be at job site at 5am-6am is required
