JOB TITLE:   

Assistant Project Director, McNair Scholars Program  

JOB PURPOSE:

Design, deliver, and evaluate individual and group services intended to result in program participant academic success in college and subsequent enrollment in graduate school, including eventual Ph.D. attainment. Assist with program operations including: recruitment of eligible and suitable participants; development and delivery of student workshops and participant services; advising participants to overcome barriers to academic and personal success; managing procurement card expenses, organizing participant travel, and managing participant payroll; event planning and implementation, including an eight-week summer research internship; and hiring and supervising graduate student mentors. In addition, this position is responsible for creating and maintaining PR and informational materials, including the McNair website and social media accounts, quarterly newsletters, and event programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain current knowledge of federal legislation, regulations, and priorities pertaining to the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair) (www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/index.html).
  • Recruit eligible and suitable participants and provide individualized participant advising. 
  • Assist with designing and implementing individual and group services and coordinating program activities intended to result in participant success and program attainment of annual and long-term grant objectives. 
  • Coordinate the hiring, training, and supervision of part-time staff for the eight-week, summer research internship program. Assist with management and coordination of summer activities, courses, requirements, and research internships for McNair participants.
  • Assist with implementation of program operating policies and procedures, including maintaining compliant participant files and entering accurate and complete data required for annual reports submitted to the U.S. Dept. of Education.
  • Manage basic accounting tasks related to staff procurement card expenses, student travel, and participant and graduate student mentor payroll. 
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and distributing PR and informational materials
  • Maintain a professional approach to problem-solving at all times and develop and maintain positive relationships with UW faculty and campus offices. 

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Occasional evening/weekend hours during the academic year and a commitment to being in Laramie for eight weeks each summer to support participant research internship activities.
  • Periodic out-of-state travel to engage in professional development and to accompany participants to conferences. 
  • Participate in SEO student-centered activities and assist in the development of SEO policy and procedures including representing McNair or SEO on campus or external committees.
  • Collaborate with other UW departments and programs to facilitate program participants' success.
  • Supervision of part-time, hourly staff.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position is potentially eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule after 6 months. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:  Bachelor's degree 

Experience: Three years of work-related experience in educational and/or grant-funded programs including working with post-secondary students in an advisory or instructional capacity.

Required education, licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: 

  •  Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
  • A successful criminal background check necessary for working with minors is required

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Master's degree. 
  • Experience working with TRiO-eligible students including those who are low-income, first generation, or otherwise underrepresented in higher education. 
  • Knowledge of advising, academic planning, and curriculum design at the post-secondary level.
  • Knowledge of research design, the scientific method of inquiry, and academic/research writing.
  • Editorial and technical writing experience.
  • Experience presenting academic/scientific work in multiple modes (research posters, oral presentations, etc.) and/or providing instruction on effective academic presentation techniques. 
  • Knowledge of effective training and supervisory techniques for hourly staff.
  • Experience planning and implementing multi-day programs or events.
  • A high level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft software including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and familiarity with databases or the ability to quickly learn new database software.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Proven ability to successfully build and maintain long-term, positive relationships with students, staff, and faculty. 
  • An individual who has experienced barriers to educational access and success similar to those of the population being served.}

PLEASE NOTE:  This is an at-will, grant-funded position. This position includes supervision of an 8-week, summer program on the UW campus during which available vacation dates are very limited.
