Sr. System Administrator

The candidate will provide on-premises System Administration support services for the VA Employee Education System (EES) and Veteran Canteen Services (VCS). The support will include VA networked and non-networked systems. It will require collaboration with local OIT support staff, Broadcast and Video Engineering team and other OIT national program support offices.

EES and VCS require support for network and application systems comprising Cisco Routers and Switches, application servers hosted on both physical and virtual servers running Windows and Linux Operating systems, and high-performance receivers and transmitters located within the CVI and VCS server farms at its St. Louis facility. This infrastructure supports public and internal web sites, video-streaming content, time-keeping applications, video content editing applications for end-user devices, and mission critical data for the VA.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

• Serve as a liaison between VA OIT and EES broadcast engineering staff on technical issues.
• Analyze system logs and identify potential issues with computer systems.
• Recommend and integrate VA approved new technologies into existing data center environments.
• Perform monthly audit of systems and software.
• Apply monthly OS updates, patches, and configuration changes.
• Install and configure new hardware and software when required.
• Add, remove, or update user account information, resetting passwords.
• Manage group policy systems access for authorized eToken users
• Answer virtual technical queries from VA IT staff and provide assistance when required.
• Maintain security of hardware, software, and data file access.
• Update and follow VA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to build out approved VA OIT Compliant Servers.
• Troubleshoot and resolve reported problems with any of the above systems.
• Provide system performance tuning.
• Configure, add, and delete file systems.
• Decommission VA systems as required.
• Recover systems after unexpected outages.
• Update and maintain the Rack Elevation Drawings.
• Update and maintain the Facility Layout Document, including providing a narrative description of the overall design of the VA OIT Server Farms.
• Update and maintain the Listing of All File Servers including server name, location, functionality, and IP addresses.
• Manage the functionality and efficiency of a group of computers running on one or more operating systems
• Maintain the integrity and security of servers and systems (both virtual and physical)
• Set up administrator and service accounts
• Maintain systems documentation
• Interact with users and evaluate vendor products
• Make recommendations to purchase hardware and software, coordinates installation and provides backup recovery
• Develop and monitor policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources
• Develop and implement testing strategies and document results
• Provide advice and training for end-users
• Provide guidance and leadership to less experienced staff members
• Maintain current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned
• Participate in special projects as requirements

Requirements

• Must be able to work onsite at the Education Resource Center VA Medical Center St. Louis VA Medical Center (VAMC),1 Jefferson Barracks Drive (Bldg. 56) St. Louis, MO 63125
• Must be able to obtain a Tier 4 VA Clearance
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 5 Years of System Administration Experience.
