By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues. And our Environmental Affairs team is equally working hard to shape an environmentally sustainable future. Together these teams advocate for a cleaner, safer, and more optimistic future for our airline, our employees, and the millions of customers we serve all around the globe.

Key Responsibilities:

Highly collaborative, Senior Specialist role driving performance insights and improvements for United's environmental compliance and sustainability teams. The Sr. Specialist will collaborate with other United departments, airports and regulatory agencies to support United's Air and Noise strategy across United's domestic and international footprint. This role will work with Network Planning to prepare NEPA CatEx reviews (noise and emission modeling) for airports where United intends to increase service, so that new aircraft types can be added to United's Operations Specification (OpSpec C070) and approved by FAA. Monitor and help influence Federal and local regulatory developments, participate in local Community Noise Roundtable meetings and involve internal stakeholders including Network Operations, Flight Ops and Government Affairs and others as needed. Execute and oversee the implementation, tracking, and ongoing analysis of projects and associated data that will inform the environmental compliance and sustainability programs, priorities and initiatives. Support other duties as assigned.

  • Assist with strategic planing, goals and key performance indicators within your program area that supports environmental sustainability strategy
  • Monitor the effectiveness of environmental and sustainability initiatives by collecting data, performing analyses, reporting and tracking progress towards goals
  • Track progress and opportunities, including the achievement of pre-determined milestones
  • Execution
  • Ensure compliance with and monitor regulations and requirements, inclusive of local, state and federal, airport authority, industry, and internal requirements
  • As the subject matter expert (SME), provide guidance and insight, proactively articulating impact on business operations by presenting relevant data and analysis, as needed
  • Ensure new requirements and policies applicable to your programs are analyzed and support implementation along with any associated training
  • Support sustainability initiatives that complement United's global strategy and goals
  • Maintain any records needed for compliance purposes

  • Act as a liaison in the coordination and continuous improvement of your program Collaborate and build rapport with external regulatory and industry members to ensure that United's positions are articulated and achieved

  • Use technical knowledge and experience to provide support in strategic implementation of United's approved projects

What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in environmental science/engineering, chemistry, or similar, with general understanding of environmental regulations and chemicals
  • At least 3-5 years of environmental experience in an environmental field using one or more of the following: RCRA, DOT, Chemicals, Clean Air Act, stormwater/NPDES, SPCC, USTs, or hazardous materials
  • Effective personal and professional communication skills
  • Project management skills
  • Basic chemistry / chemical knowledge
  • Reading & interpreting Safety Data Sheets and other product information
  • Presentation skills, adaptable to varying levels of employees and leadership
  • Able to analyze and interpret data
  • Environmental regulatory knowledge
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, works independently with little oversight
  • Problem solver
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office suite, SharePoint, cloud-based database systems
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Related experience with chemical research, and OSHA
  • DOT Hazmat, HAZWOPER
  • Experience with airline operations
