Position:Senior Scientific Director, Head of CV Pharmacology

Position Summary
The Senior Scientific Director, Head of CV Pharmacology will build and lead a large group of scientists dedicated to the experimental study of physiology & pharmacology in the cardiovascular field. The position reports directly to the Department Head of CV Discovery and involves managing two groups in separate locations; Lawrenceville, NJ and Brisbane, CA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build, organize and manage a multi-functional, cross-site group of scientists that includes laboratory heads and technical staff with expertise in cardiac pharmacology, predominantly focused on in vivo pharmacology, but also including ex vivo whole organ and muscle fiber pharmacology.
- Ensure smooth interactions and appropriate support levels to facilitate drug discovery progression within the working groups.
- Ensure appropriate interface across the organization to ensure pre-clinical pharmacological testing supports molecule progression into the clinic. Build a translational pharmacology package in collaboration with early development colleagues.
- Establish and implement a strategy to identify and validate new pharmacological models.
- Establish and implement methods to investigate, validate and progress novel targets for CV Drug Discovery.
- Be a leading contributor to developing the drug discovery strategy within CV Drug Discovery.
- Support compliance with institutional animal care and use policies.
- Day to day responsibilities include directorship of scientific staff, effective collaborations with cross functional leaders, management of external relationships with CROs and alliance partners (US and international), departmental budget projections and oversight.
- Manage the career progression of CV Pharmacology team members.
- Write pharmacology reports and regulatory documents to support regulatory filings.
- Contribute to the leadership of the CV Drug Discovery department; policy matters, recruitment, succession planning, diversity.
- Assess pharmacological suitability of potential business development assets.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 15+ years of academic and / or industry experience
Or
- Master's Degree
- 12+ years of academic and / or industry experience
Or
- Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
- 10+ years of academic and / or industry experience
- 8+ years of leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD + 20 years experience overall, at least 15 years of industry experience.
- Expertise in the field of Pharmacology based on experience and strong publication record with a focus on in vivo CV Pharmacology.
- Expert knowledge in cardiac mechanics, pathology and physiology, and relevant imaging modalities (i.e., hemodynamics, ultrasound, cMR, PET).
- Keen understanding of progression of diverse therapeutics (small molecules, biologics, nucleotides).
- Demonstrated success in interfacing with development teams and team leaders.
- Demonstrated success in line-managing teams of 10+ scientists.
- Demonstrated success in matrix managing drug discovery teams (e.g., compound(s) progressed into development).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to developing one's own leadership skills via participation in scientific management training.
The starting compensation for this job is a range from $231,000 - $289,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
