Job description

The department of Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) is seeking a Senior Registered Dietitian (SRD) to perform a variety of functions related to education and nutrition counseling to support Johns Hopkins students’ overall health, well-being and quality of life. This is a shared position with Primary Care, Health Promotions, and Athletics that will report directly to the Chief Medical Director for Student Health & Well-Being. The SRD functions as an integral member of the clinical interdisciplinary team by providing outpatient nutrition services and medical nutritional therapy integrated with the goals of patients who carry a variety of diagnoses. The SRD will work closely with other clinical staff, including Athletic Trainers, Social Workers, Psychologists, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. The SRD recommends appropriate medical nutrition therapy based on the diagnosis of the patient and nutritional status. The SRD contributes to departmental achievements through process improvement. The SRD documents nutritional interventions including plan of care in the electronic medical record. The SRD functions as a nutrition educator and conducts programs for students and campus partners.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for Johns Hopkins students and trainees, taking into account chronic conditions, social determinants of health, and culture.
  • Integrate skills and knowledge of pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical management, cardiometabolic condition, and self-management of the medical condition into clinical practice.
  • Provide education to patient related to disease, medical therapy, medication management, and healthy lifestyle, including meal planning, physical activity, mental health, and complication prevention and personal monitoring of disease or illness.
  • Monitor patient’s disease status through assessment of data to ensure patient receives safe and timely care in collaboration with the medical providers.
  • Develop and review evidence-based educational curriculum for patients and other members of the healthcare team for area of specialization.
  • Assist in the review and/or development of clinical practice guidelines, policies, and procedures for the nutrition management of the patient population and serve as the content expert.
  • Follow national practice guidelines set forth by population specific associations or societies that align with credential specialization.
  • Serve as a point of contact and content expert for specialty care area of practice, including training to other RDs specializing in the same practice area of medical nutrition therapy.
  • Provide training opportunities for Johns Hopkins dietetic interns.
  • Act as the Social Media Manager for all of SHWB Primary Care
  • Create website and social media content regarding nutrition-related topics including blog posts for wellbeing website.
  • Partner with Student Outreach and Support to select items with optimal nutrition benefits for the Hopkins Food Pantry.
  • Partner with SHWB staff to present multidisciplinary well-being programming.
  • Participate in Eating Disorder Collaborative (EDC) team meetings with primary care and mental health staff, may also be requested to co-lead group sessions for students with eating disorders with counseling center staff.
  • Attend SHWB educational and accreditation programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in continuing educational programs.
  • Participate and/or lead quality improvement and research projects to meet and improve standards of care.
  • Document all aspects of the nutrition care process for patients in accordance with the departments’ guidelines and standards of practice.
  • Be self-directed and independent, but also work well in an interdisciplinary team setting.
  • Treat everyone with compassion, courtesy, care and respect.
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • The Senior Registered Dietician will split their time among several areas within the University, percent effort is outlined below but is subject to change over time based on needs.


Homewood Primary Care & Mental Health Services (35%)

  • See students for individual nutrition consultations and follow-up visits.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary eating disorder team meetings.
  • Educate providers on nutritional topics.
  • Participate in community outreach events.
  • Collaborate with Student Outreach and Support on their food pantry initiative, and potential for future collaboration with student groups on community garden.


Health Promotion & Well-Being (HPWB) (20%)

  • Individual and/or small group nutrition education sessions.
  • Design and teach cooking classes (virtually or in community kitchen).
  • Assist with website and social media content on nutrition.
  • Consult with student groups and health education staff, participate in collaborative programming (alcohol and drug use, general health education, trauma informed).


Homewood Athletics (20%)

  • Consultations on individual athletes and trainers/coaches and group nutrition sessions with teams.
  • Recommendations/assistance with Athlete Fueling Station and pre/post-training nutrition.
  • Work on social media/website/educational resources.


Peabody Conservatory (10%)

  • Provide on-site services catering to the special needs of the performing arts student population.


East Baltimore and Washington DC Primary Care and Mental Health Services (15%)

  • See students and learners for individual nutrition consultations and follow-up visits.

Additional Information
  • During the Influenza ('the flu') season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

*The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited dietetics program in nutrition.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience with focus on the following populations: People with eating disorders, Athletes, or young adults.
  • Pass CDR's Registration Examination for Registered Dietitians to become a credentialed as registered dietetics nutritionist (RDN).
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Dietitian-Nutritionist in Maryland and Washington DC.
  • Master of Public Health with a concentration in nutrition.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience with focus on the following populations: People with eating disorders, Athletes, or young adults.
  • Pass CDR's Registration Examination for Registered Dietitians to become a credentialed as registered dietetics nutritionist (RDN).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition preferred.
