COORDINATES WITH

Primarily working with teams across the Advocacy, Alliances and Policy Division, particularly Campaigns and Government Relations and Public Policy. This role will also work with Media and Digital teams in the Public Engagement Division, and with Oxfam International and other Oxfam affiliates as part of the global inequality and tax teams.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Senior Policy Advisor for Economic Justice will shape and support Oxfam America’s policy and advocacy leadership to address economic and racial inequality both in the US and internationally – helping to advance, and holding responsibilities as part of, a strategic, fast-paced, and wide-ranging portfolio. The Senior Policy Advisor will work with and support others to influence US policy and drive narrative change to fight inequality in the US and globally. They will do so by preparing reports and supporting research, providing organizational expertise, engaging policymakers, monitoring inequality trends, and collaborating with colleagues at Oxfam America, the wider Oxfam Confederation, and external allies. While the Senior Policy Advisor will engage in a range of economic inequality issues, specific experience with issues of international and/or domestic taxation is an advantage.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analysis: Prepare and support the drafting of papers and other materials that analyze issues relevant to economic inequality within the US and the US’ role globally. These include issues of wealth and income inequality, progressive taxation, public services and the global financial system. The Senior Policy Advisor will interact with a range of areas including poverty, sovereign debt, social spending, corporate power, and intersect with climate, gender, and racial justice.
  • Policy change: Support and foster engagement with the executive branch, Congress and civil society allies to secure policy outcomes that tackle economic, racial and gender inequality. Expected to engage on issues of progressive taxation – domestically and pertaining to the US’ international role – within coalition spaces and more broadly.
  • Narrative change: Support efforts to drive public narrative change on inequality issues and help to translate complex economic ideas into eye-catching and accessible messaging, including in support of Oxfam America’s Campaigns and Public Engagement teams.
  • Relationships: In coordination with Oxfam America colleagues and as appropriate for responsibilities, develop and maintain relationships with external partners and colleagues, collaborate with the same to advance shared goals, and represent Oxfam America with external audiences as necessary.
  • Intersectionality: Support and shape Oxfam America’s thinking on economic and racial inequality, ensuring an intersectional approach inclusive of racial and gender justice, and decoloniality.
  • Monitoring: Keep a pulse on the US political and economic landscape and track relevant developments relating to issues of Economic Justice for colleagues at Oxfam America and the wider Oxfam confederation.
  • Internal collaboration: Work with teams across Oxfam America and the Oxfam confederation to shape strategic planning regarding economic inequality in the US and in international contexts. Provide expert review to Oxfam America and Oxfam confederation work on Economic Justice and inequality.

Oxfam America employees are able to work remotely, but to be considered applicants must reside in one of the following states that are within a 200-mile radius of an Oxfam America office which are located in Boston and Washington DC: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, VA, MD, NC or DC.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

  • Advanced degree in economics, international relations, public policy, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

EXPERIENCE AND CORE COMPETENCIES

  • At least 4-6 years of experience working on inequality-related or Economic Justice issues.
  • Relevant experience undertaking policy advocacy and understanding of inequality-related policies.
  • Demonstrable passion for, and track record in the service of, Economic Justice.
  • Strong research and analytical skills relevant to public policy, including demonstrable experience undertaking analysis of inequality issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate complex Economic Justice or inequality-related analysis in a compelling, actionable manner for a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of the US Congress and the policy-making process.
  • Flexible and adaptive work style, comfortable switching between inequality issues and contexts.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills; ability to prioritize workload and multi-task.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to write effectively to a professional standard.
  • Experience in integrating economic, racial and gender inequality issues into research and analysis.
  • Creative and strategic thinker, able to advance ambitious Economic Justice-related policies and ideas.
  • Experience engaging with partners and coalitions in pursuit of shared goals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience of international as well as domestic economic / inequality issues is highly desirable.
  • Experience of international and domestic taxation issues is desirable but not essential.
