Job Summary and Qualifications

The Wireless Network Engineer designs and operates an enterprise-class WiFi network spanning multiple buildings and campuses. The engineer configures, administers, installs, and upgrades wireless network infrastructure components. The engineer maintains, optimizes, and troubleshoots wireless enterprise network services (data, voice, location, security). The engineer identifies, diagnoses, and resolves wireless network communication issues. The engineer performs wireless RF site surveys (both predictive and on-site [AP on a stick]).
This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be knowledgeable about both wired and wireless network technology. An in-depth background in wireless equipment, standards, protocols, and security standards, as well as wireless local area network (WLAN) design is necessary. Wireless Network Engineers must also be effective communicators with excellent written, verbal communications, and presentation skills to collaborate successfully with Network Engineers, vendors, and managers. Wireless Network Engineers should also demonstrate project leadership skills and excellent customer interaction skills.

  • Research, design, plan, deploy, and improve wireless networks from the beginning to implementation to support hand-off by collaborating with vendors, Network Engineers and managers. 
  • Understand client requirements to be able to cater to their appropriate needs. 
  • Design and validate the performance, quality, and reliability of the RF link. 
  • Make recommendations for wireless network optimization, additions, and upgrades to meet the customer's requirements. 
  • Conduct and document radio frequency (RF) coverage and site surveys. 
  • Have knowledge of firewalls such as Palo Alto, Checkpoint or Cisco ASA. Mentor in-house engineers to train them on wireless technologies in addition to guiding non-technical people. 
  • Create documentation so that any member of the network team can support and troubleshoot wireless network issues. 
  • Use tools to evaluate, test and improve wireless products. 
  • Design and implement WLANs and other wireless features. 
  • Write manuals and document current wireless network procedures. 
  • Have knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP). 
  • Make use of enterprise monitoring tools. 
  • Optimize wireless network performance by addressing network problems and breakdowns, and partnering with Network Engineers to optimize the network. 
  • Collaborate with different teams to ensure the optimized performance of VoIP and other wireless telecommunication devices. 
  • Evaluate security threats, troubleshoot issues, and comply with appropriate security configuration standards of their customer organizations. 
  • Implement rouge detection and containment, and other security requirements. 
  • Design and deploy changes to the configurations of wireless equipment as per the applicable change management process. 
  • Build out and manage centralized management platform (Airwave) and add all sites and equipment. 
  • Establish and manage monitoring, alerting, and visual dashboards. 

As a secondary skill, the successful candidate for this position must demonstrate routing/switching design and implementation skills and/or firewall design and implementation skills. This can include: 

  • Design and implementation of complex large-scale WAN/LAN designs utilizing best practice switching/routing technologies and topologies. (Fortune 100 experience in network design, deployment, and support).
  • Planning and integration of new technologies within a large network environment. 
  • New and best-of-breed product and technology evaluations, research and participate in vendor selections. 
  • Working with vendors on product design enhancements and integration of new technologies. OSPF/BGP routing protocols, IP advertising/advanced filtering/redistribution, Quality of Service, IP multicast. 
  • Engineering consultations of Level III network troubleshooting/problem resolutions, protocol analysis, network troubleshooting/problem determination skills with network trace/capture/analysis software. 
  • System architecture and tiered application modules knowledge. Understanding of end-to-end data flows and traffic patterns. 
  • Network impact analysis, modeling, network capacity planning. 
  • Software/hardware device upgrades, LAN equipment configurations/provisioning (see specific technologies within Area of Experience section). 
  • IP addressing, variable length subnet masking. 
  • Wide Area Network technology design, provisioning and configuration (e.g., MPLS, VPLS, Metro Ethernet, Private Line) and WAN equipment configurations for bandwidth rates from DSL to 10 Gb, as well as Metro-E connectivity from 10 Mb to 10 Gb. 
  • Networking services for ACS, AAA, DHCP, BOOTP, DNS, ICMP and SNMP. 
  • Design and Support for network security technologies and products (e.g., Cisco ASA, Checkpoint, Palo Alto). Create new VPN tunnels between firewalls and/or between firewalls and Meraki equipment. Providing input on network standards and policies/procedural documentation and enterprise level network diagramming. 

What qualifications you will need:

  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Five or more years Wireless Network Engineering experience
  • Five plus years of experience with 802.1X, RADIUS, EAP-TLS WLAN standards
  • Four or more years experience RF Design, RF Survey/Engineering and RF troubleshooting skills
  • Two plus years of experience with Airmagnet, Ekahau or other site survey software
  • Aruba, Cisco and Meraki wireless experience
  • Expertise in troubleshooting WiFi connectivity and performance issues WLAN controllers, over-the-air packet capture analysis and spectrum analyzers

Licenses, Certifications and Training

  • CCNP Enterprise with one network wireless concentration 
  • CWNP Certified Wireless Network Professional 
  • Aruba Certified Mobility Professional 
  • CWNA Certified Wireless Network Administrator 
  • Aruba Certified Mobility Associate
